Guitar since 1984
Bass since 1992
Keyboards since 1998
Percussions since 2004
I'm glad life is a constant learning process. It is really fun to be able to play all instruments when writing songs.
But I still prefer to play along with other musicians for the interaction!

I'm pretty confident that I can pick up any instrument that I put in my hands, though the dexterity of my hands limits my abilities and talent on instruments like the guitar and left/bass-piano i still fully understand scales and chording on them and could freejam with just about anyone. I own and love both
Woodwinds and brass are nice too, I grew up playing the trumpet which is where my ability to read/write notation, and my basic understanding of music theory comes from. Skills I often take for granted.
Needless to say, in a band enviroment I'd rather call myself a synthesizer player and/or programmer rather than a keyboardist because I don't feel both my hands live up the requirements in order to justify calling myself that
When I play live I have to be surrounded by keyboards. It's a must.

IMHO being a performer (and knowing theory) really helps a lot while composing electronic music too, even while using samples & loops.

I play electronic organ, keyboards, and classical pipe organ weekly, solo and accompanying choires. Here latency comes naturally just like magnificent reverb.
In order to practise the classical stuff I use Gigasampler with Post organ samples, hardware reverb and multiple midi keyboards (one of them is a Yamaha S03 in fact). Just for your information.
p.s. exploring VST synths is a nice hobby next to this.

Just wanted to do a short poll on what instruments you guys all play.
Ive been playing the piano since ´81 but i wouldnt consider myself a piano player... more of a synth programmer

i started out as a guitarist, and went to a contemporary music college (ACM, guildford) a few years ago to cement my skills and theory, but then gave up on it for a while in embittered disillusionment.
since then i discovered computers, and have taken more to 'sculpting' a performance out of recordings i make of instruments which i've assembled from various objects. they're generally unplayable in a live, real-world scenario, but with a computer and various audio editing tools i can make them real.
i can still play guitar when i need to.. i certainly don't consider myself a guitarist nowadays

I used to play trumpet in high school.. though its going on 7 years since i graduated.. but i still like to tell myself i'll buy one eventually and take it up again.
i'm also trying to play piano and guitar..
although recently the only thing i've been playing is world of warcraft.
