At any rate, sorry we can't accomodate that request easily (or at all).
Vember Audio Surge is now open-source

I don't have Helm installed (nor did I plan on installing it), so audio example would've been better.
At any rate, sorry we can't accomodate that request easily (or at all).

You dont have Helm installed!?
Whats wrong with you?
Kidding aside, audio may be too big to attach here so i would have to go to an offsite filehoster again. On the other hand since KVR recently raised the max maybe i can make it short and sweet enough to get it on here. Will see.

BTW you could always try and make that sound into a wavetable and load it into Surge, see how that goes.
(Just because a synth is free and open-source doesn't mean everybody's gotta have it and enjoy/like it

I suppose i could try this but then why bother, might as well keep the Helm instance then.EvilDragon wrote: BTW you could always try and make that sound into a wavetable and load it intto Surge, see how that goes.
Thats true.EvilDragon wrote:Just because a synth is free and open-source doesn't mean everybody's gotta have it and enjoy/like it![]()
Anyway, here is some audio. (Its all Helm plus LinnDrum Kick, DMX Snare, DMX Hats.) It starts with the SUB slider on 0 and then i drag it up to 250. After that you can hear a short excerpt of what im currently working on, you know, for context and why this bass. (BTW the reason why i thought of switching everything over to Surge is because Surges comb filter is needed for the 'laser' sound that plays during the 'chorus' part. (Not included in this short bit.) I have it pretty much right already, in some ways i like it even better than the original!)

You can use Surge as an effect, too, routing Helm into Surge's audio input and then combing that.
Won't be polyphonic tho.

I know, but that wont be necessary.EvilDragon wrote: Sun Nov 01, 2020 10:55 pm You can use Surge as an effect, too, routing Helm into Surge's audio input and then combing that.

Surges own oscillator is perfectly OK for this 'laser gun' sound, the important part is the comb filter.
(And just to be clear, IMO there is absolutely nothing wrong with Surges oscillators in general. Its just that i had a special case here where i needed the sub to be an octave higher than the main in order to get the desired waveform, (which as i said cant be done since sub pitch is hard-coupled to main pitch and using two main oscs instead doesnt work), but apart from that Surges oscillators are perfectly fine not only with regard to sound but versatility as well, so no complaints from me.)

Oh I didn't think you implied that anything was wrong with Surge's oscs. Just a FR taken at face value.
In fact, it is absolutely ridiculous how clean they are, compared to how old the code is. Realistically, probably only Serum and Massive X are cleaner (and they come at a much higher CPU load, by comparison).

I think the main problem here is the shape of the default waveforms. For example, Helm's goes saw goes up, while Surge's goes down. I think I got pretty close here by using wavetables with different saws/squares than the default:
Osc 2 functions as the "Sub" in this case. You'll have to mess with the volume slider, because the scaling's very different than Helm.

Hi AJAJYoung wrote: Mon Nov 02, 2020 9:21 pmI think the main problem here is the shape of the default waveforms. For example, Helm's goes saw goes up, while Surge's goes down.
You have found the crucial element. Indeed the saw needs to go up for this particular waveform to form, which i should have realized because i had actually noticed this when i made the Helm preset. (Which has both saw types.) So in the end its as simple as this:
- Osc1, wavetable, basic, trisaw, shape 100%, -2oct, retrigger
- Osc2, classic, square, -1oct, retrigger
- Osc1 volume 0dB
- Osc2 volume between -1.5dB and 0dB
This will give the right waveform, only Surge has considerably less bass than Helm.
So thanks for this. Since i already knew that this solves the problem i didnt need to download your preset anymore, but i thank you kindly for your time and effort regardless, youve found the solution and its much appreciated.
Thank you.

Quick question, would surge with an update, be able to do some more synthesis techniques similar to what Tranzistow can do? Like the Solaris, Andromeda and so forth? Just curious....It seems like you guys put a lot of work in.EvilDragon wrote: Tue Nov 03, 2020 7:59 amHold on a sec!
