What I just heard, about a yard from me, just outside the window.
*vvvvmmmmmm* (ruby-throated hummingbird arrives at feeder, hovers in place drinking sugar water)
*VVVVMMM-thwack* (a sound like two corks hitting each other; another arrives and bodily strikes the first in mid-air)
*PEEP PEEP chatter Vvvvvmmmmm* (they fly away, fighting intensely for about three seconds at warp speed)
...
*vvvvmmmmmm* (the victor returns for a prize of nectar)

(They don't call 'em "bird brains" for nothing - and you could call that "the littlest 'big' battle.")

No wonder they're all more aggressive than usual. The sugar water was nearly out. Cleaned the feeder and added some.
But hummingbirds are always fighty. The males especially are ultra-territorial and will go at it for ages (a minute or so, which is three ruby-throat years).

This morning there was plenty of it. The number of birds has gone way up since the trumpet vines have faded. Three to five visits a minute sometimes I can't always tell how many individuals there are.
Now listening to: Disgraceful fret noise because I cannot get my fingers to bend the right way. Grar.
