Good thread. Ok, cat amongst the pigeons I suppose, but a big fat vote for Brian Wilson.

Pet Sounds is the most overrated album ever. I bought it, played it, and played it again, and still didnt get it at all. (Apart from God only knows of course) As for Smile, well, Utter self indulgent shite. No wonder his original band thought he had lost the plot. He had, bigtime.

As for today, well, the man looks like an idiot sat behind the piano onstage, smirking. And there's a reason, I'm tellin ya, it's actually the corpse of Wilson being shunted around the country

If the guy was playing in my garden, I'd shut the curtains and call the cops.

Hans Zimmer. God... I hate his music.

Then again, I think most western composers in the film music business are overrated.

Haha I think you summed up how people are using the term "overated" exactly right. It's all subjective, all of it. Perhaps if you started to break down the offerings of the artist or group by talents: vocal or lyrics or playing ability or on-stage theatrics Etc. such a term might be generally useful, but as a catch-all term it is useless.

soo agreee with that
Obviously you have NEVER EVER tried this technique. IT takes a quite a bit of ability to do this well (THE KEY IS WELL!) The fundamentals and skills required to sample and program are so beyond most people's ken, that they assume it is easy and a rip off. Those that have the appropriate engineering skills, but never do it often lack the "creative mind" that would make putting together an appealing production possible.

Try to imagine this, taking a picture of a nature landscape, breaking it up into a 1000 pieces and then re-arranging it into a realistic vision of NYC circa 2525, without out altering any of the pixel colors. This is similar to what many of the better loop/sample artists do with music. To do what they do one must transcend the many styles of music they work with to farm cogent material to create their own unique production.

I don't expect to convince anyone who disagrees. For those that do, just hate that music. Hate is rarely a good way to measure the quality of someone else's art. Especially if one's insecurity is added to the measurements. LOL

MY MOST OVER RATED - Any musician who is silly enough to compare and trash electronica music, because it isn't played by musicians. Any musician who trashes electronica music for the features of that genre that define it, namely being programmed, synthetic sounding and lacking in human touch. LOL Trashing electronica and computer music for these reasons is about as smart as trashing heavy metal/rock for using distorted guitar. The true irony is most "live played" music today relies heavily on the techniques of loop/sampling (as in NIN - which I love)

PS: Oh and NO I do not write loop/sample music. I write and play all my own parts from the ground up. :) I do love a lot of sample/loop music though.

To be honest, it's even more simple than that.

No-ones mentioned Bowie because he's the ultimate rockstar, who deserves every bit of praise ever afforded him.

I agree on Radiohead. I absolutely love them, but I certainly don't agree that OK Computer is the best album ever, which seems to be the consensus among british music journalists, at least back when I still read NME and Q and stuff...
