Hey, this is off topic but has anyone here had any luck compiling LMMS with VST support? When you compile it, (V.1.4), You're supposed to patch two files called 'aeffect.h" and "Affectx.h" or something like that.... Well, when I try to patch those files I get failures every time. I can compile & run LMMS on FC4 and Slackware but no luck with VST support!!! It sucks, because I spent for bloody ever chasing down the dependancies, and figuring out how to make all the proper library links for obscelete dependancies. If anyone has successfully enabled VST support, and wants to make me an .rpm or .tgz, or even send me the two pre-patched files I need that would be mighty nice of ya! I was hoping LMMS would keep me busy until the tuxified version of eXT gets finished.

I personally prefer OpenBox by alot - leaner, meaner, and more standards-compliant than Fluxbox! Plus it has dual-monitor support, and window-resizing works better, and it's waaaaay less complicated.sirTUXalot wrote:Germ777 wrote:fake wrote:

ok .. i ran linux for a few years, and became somewhat familiar with it. the things i appreciated most were being 'un'-assimilated by the borg, and having a more stable OS.
while i think it is very novel to have eXT on Linux, i cannot see what advantages it would have other then creating a music specific distro? i run a ton of VSTi's and from what i see there are not alot of VSTi/VST's out there that will run under linux. Perhaps i am missing some key piece of info?

sirTUXalot, does the slax CD let you install on your HD (as in easy to do)? does it come on a single disk? is KDE only, or GNOME also?

Versions 5.0.6 and earlier have an automated installer, the newest version (5.0.7b) does not. I personally don't like the installer. I used the latest version (5.0.7b) because it has KDE 3.5, and because the kernel auto-mounts hotplugged devices. (which is why I don't use good ol' slackware 10.2) It comes on a single disk, and it does come with KDE, but there are modules for Gnome, Fluxbox, XFCE, etc. Download the .iso for v.5.0.7b, and get MySLAX creator, and add whichever modules you care to use.
It comes on one disk, and even with tons of modules it probably won't exceed 500mb. If you have problems, let me know - I'll be happy to help! I did have to do a little "tweaking" to get everything 100% - but slax is now 100% functional on my laptop, with ACPI support, synaptics touchpad drivers working, widescreen resolution, and it is ridiculously fast. Including partitioning, the install took me about 20 minutes.

Which flavour? I'm running Slax installed on my laptop HDD and I just finally got LMMS to compile with VST support. So far I can get oddity, vstation, and nearly all of the freebies I've got working. I did experience a crash when loading more than 2 instances of Vestige, and once I exit LMMS, my audio driver doesn't work again unless I logout / log back in. I'm gonna have to investigate that later, it's pretty late. I'm just excited to have LMMS w/VST up and running! GUI looked nice, CPU usage was reasonable... I haven't tested MIDI and there are no presets apparently..
Oh well, those presets can tend to be a crutch!Cheerio,

cant the borg just add a VST build option in the SDK? theres one there for BEOS I think and thats quite unixy. sheesh so's osx for that matter.

I used Ubuntu for a while, my Mom uses it on her computer. I dislike the "sudo" feature. Call me old fashioned, but I like being able to SU as root. I also found myself unable to get the Cups daemon to run, and printing is kinda important for me. Plus it's a lot bigger and slower than Slax. Try out the LiveCD version of Slax, the modular format for adding software is super cool, and it's really easy to "remix" the liveCD with whichever modules you want. It is by far the best LiveCD distro IMHO, and a very easy way to get a slackware system on your PC that will already have hotplug support, etc. NOTE: Versions 5.0.6 and earlier have trouble with CUPS as well. Use 5.0.7b.

Otherwise there's Rosegarden, which is similar to Cakewalk, and I hear VST support is available with DSSI. It just makes me mad that I can't get a package for LMMS pre-build with the VST SDK. Stupid Steinberg! There's a really cool modular synth program called SpiralSynth. I haven't quite wrapped my head around that one yet but it seems like it has a lot of potential. Unfortunately it's not under development anymore.
Oh, and I also recently compiled "Reborn" which is a clone of Rebirth. I use it probably a lot like how many people use "Solitare" in Windows - strictly a time killer.
