I've used Tunafish some. It's pretty easy and very stable. It has its limitations, but it does what it does extremely well. I would certainly recommend it for $30.

it's a different mindset but once you know get your head round it it's very powerful indeed
I can vouch for renoise. It's excellent. VST support, VST automation support, and basic internal effects are wonderful. MIDI implementation is very good, no piano roll (it is a tracker) but it really is very sweet.

Transition from patterns/playlist should be pretty seamless also, Kriminal, in that playlist = orderlist (where you put patterns), and patterns are still patterns :) You can also record realtime performance with external devices and automate things easily; hit record, play, stop. The downside is that patterns are a fixed length, so to work linearly with infinite space to lay down the notes is not as easy to do. Renoise can adjust pattern length, but to a certain limit (of which I am not sure).

The interface is the best tracking interface too. MadTracker is also excellent (I own both). Whether plugins that generate MIDI output (like stepsequencers and filters and stuff) work or not I cannot say for sure as I have not tried them; but the micromanagement level of control you get inside the pattern editor makes those things not so useful anyway.

Considering in your OP that you mentioned no big learning curve, I don't know if a tracker would be that or not. IMO it's not that hard, but I was raised on them. Looking back, it wasn't obvious and I had to do some research so..

Why, may I ask do you hate ImageLine so much? If you could set your personal feelings aside, what it seems that you are asking for is FLStudio. It's just like orion but quite a bit more going on than orion; which /could/ be a bad thing..

Good luck.

Cool. There is a recent port/version of that as well if you ever get nostalgic. Glad you found your answers in all the mess. Let us know what you choose in the end ;)

Does that support patterns/grid based stuff as you requested? I don't know as I have only tried the free version that came bundled with an old associates audio hardware. I have an M-Audio board though and the M-Powered stuff has tempted me (protools has quite a reputation of course).

Thanks for letting us know.

is that because you're a 'pro' or a 'tool'..?
