I hope more people start using HTML 5 because I feel flash has overstayed it's welcome with excessive cpu usage.
It has gotten pretty slugish of late iteration and the lack of backward system compatibility has put a dent on its name (dam you Adobe!) .

However, saying it will 'never be on the Ipad' is an invitation for some smart hacker kid to do just that. I can see it getting on there one way or another.

Um has anyone tried using YouTube on it or some other site that uses flash as the content delivery system?

Just wondering.

About 14GB free on a fresh 16GB iPad.

It is relatively restricted in comparison to a normal PC. It would depend on what you want to transfer and from where I guess. I think for photos and video you usually need to go through iTunes which means a USB cable... But there are apps for things like wireless streaming of video.

There is no flash, so anything Flash does not work.

That said, they've done something for YouTube specifically and even embeds work fine in most cases. Not sure if it's silently substituting an html5 version or what.

As I said earlier, early buyers are Appleholics who buy anything the company makes...just because.
classic logical fallacy.
On the basis of what? It's obvious enough that those in line to buy iPads aren't even in need of them. They're true believers at the church of Apple. The logical fallacy is your conclusion.
It is a "does not follow" fallacy.

"the logical fallacy is your conclusion." i can't think of anything to say but laoula at that. What were you thinking when you wrote that? Watch too many peewee Herman episodes?
These are not people buying a product because they have a need for it...they have a want for it. Quite different. Your incorrect conclusion that this is a logical fallacy simply isn't true. It does follow. And if it didn't it would be a post hoc fallacy. As it is, unlike iPhones, which had a clear and obvious use, the same can't be said in terms of why those buying on the first day are doing so.

It might also have to do with how apple's never really gotten flash to work well. Anyone with a macbook will tell you that a simple transparent task like watching youtube will heat it up too hot for your lap.

Odd how every other computer and mobile OS doesn't have problems with flash, as outdated and clunky as it may be.

That is true of ~90% of the electronic things & content I buy. It's called entertainment.

Yeah you have to define 'need'. Need in terms of what, 'survival'? Nobody, I would wager, 'needs' an iPhone, or pretty much anything except basic food, shelter, companionship... As the above says, it's called culture, what we do that we don't 'have' to do.

Surely it would be Adobe's job to get Flash to work well, seeing as they make it.

Of course...but, if one already has a smartphone and a laptop/notebook, this new device is essentially superfluous, and not nearly as useful in that it doesn't have the portable size of a phone nor the keyboard, multi-application capability of a laptop. I have a Blackberry because there's nothing as good as a hardware, QUERTY keyboard to quickly and easily enter text.

Balls. The REAL reason Apple won't EVER support Flash on the iPad/Phone is because it would swiftly destroy their appstore monopoly.

For better or worse, I dunno, and could care less.

For you perhaps. Here's a very typical usecase for me (when Apple finally get to even announce when it's going to be available in the Netherlands):

Sitting on the couch doing my own thing, while my wife is sitting next to me - hogging the TV for watching The Hills, America's Next Top model or Fringe. The couch is not the natural habitat of a smartphone or a netbook/laptop. A big-screened tablet is.

I for one am really looking forward to getting one.

From an operating system's point of view Flash is just a class and actionscript is a Java like 'sub language'. If the iPad's os has a partial UNIX backbone a good hacker group could probably get it to run without much problems. I've seen Flash run in places where it was documented to not be supported (ie Palm OS some Linux dist's). Plus they'd have some help by looking at how the flash class operates on OSX. I know its not on there now, but it could be put on there and probably even the iPhone with some effort. If enough ppl get up in arms about it not being on the iPad some kid will make it happen just to prove a point.

She's a bigger gadgetfreak than I am, so she'll be happy the iPad on our couch! In fact, I believe in many homes the iPad will turn out to be a shared device on the couch or sitting on the coffee table.
