JP6K emulates how JP-8000 looks spot on, yet Adam didn't receive any complaints from Roland.
That doesn't guarantee they wouldn't go after TAL, of course. Better safe than sorry.

Personally, I don't mind if the UI looks a bit different from the original. It's the sound that matters. I understand that some people would like a 100% replica. But I'd also understand Roland if they didn't allow other developers to copy their design.

Post

It already looks different enough because of the sequencer. ;)

dark/original mid gray/light options would be great.
anyway nitpicking about the GUI would only delay the release.
i say the 2 GUIS posted are more than nice as they are .
release the thing already!

Quite funny imo, on the one hand, TAL has to be very clear about what they're emulating, by calling it TAL-Bassline-101 and copying the look, so that people get attracted, on the other hand, they have to make sure, they don't copy it too well, to not cause copyright issues. :hihi: IMO, they should just call it TAL-Bassline 2, and don't care about similar looks. But then, not sure if Roland will jump the wagon (if that's the correct saying) anyway. But could be the financial death for such a small company if Roland does so, so i would be very careful...

I really look forward to this one!

It will be fine. He will not get sued. TAL is not using the same company name, model name, exact design, or features, of the instrument it emulates.
Skinning support would be a nice feature to have. I will buy this sucker as soon as it's out!
I'm happy that TAL makes these emulations. I love the U-NO-LX, and bought that one too when it was out.

He might as well ask Roland. I mean, Roland no longer makes that synth, it has nothing to lose. Instead it benefits from a renowned plugin developer's emulation of one of its hardware products.
Since the original looked ugly and utterly boring, one can't even speak of violating some registered design or whatever...

Is.

It.

Out.

Yet.

My original comment about legal hassle from Roland was based on some posts I read a long time ago about other developers being asked to change the GUI of a 303 emulation - but I can't recall who it was.

So maybe I'm wrong, but the design is instantly recognisable and that might be why they prosecute over the TB and not other Roland synths.

Peace,
Andy.

I don't think that's the point. The point is, that Roland could do a software emulation of it themselves in the future, just like KORG did with their Legacy Collection. Imagine what they would say if they find out, that someone else not only copied (stole) the look of their synthesizer, but also took a part of the name, and named it after it, and sells that product. I think TAL does the best not saying or doing anything at all. He can still react when Roland tells him to change the name and the looks. I don't think they would force a legal suit immediately anyway, rather ask to change the name and the GUI first.

yup, that was the original d16 Phoscyon GUI that got withdrawn (er...redrawn?) :hihi:
Such a pity, it was extremely cool. Not sure if it's unofficially available for the current Phoscyon version...as IIRC, d16 P is skinnable. Anyone have any insights on that? (sorry for slight thread detour)

Post

The original Nepheton gui got pulled but I don't remember it happening with Phoscyon.

TAL must just continue to do what he does. I wouldn't worry too much about Roland's reaction. Roland seems totally disinterested in making softsynths, let alone believable emulations of their own legacy analogs...remember the VariOS rack with the 303 and Jupiter emus? Not so cool.
Things might change if they decide to enter the VST market, and then they could get heavy with any devs with products resembling their hardware. I thought it was quite ballsy of d16 to keep LuSH-101 so close to the original, even flipping the bird with the (Lu)SH-101 name, especially as they were the ones Roland jumped on regarding the 303 GUI.
And, curiously, ReBirth never seemed to pose a problem at all, even with the sampled 909 hihats...go figure.
