Actually, although I don't see any problem if you edit the skin for your own use, you'll need authorization from Full Bucket (and me) to re-distribute. I can tell you upfront that I'm not in favor of that. This is an actively maintained plugin with updates over time and possible new versions in the future, and redistributing 'hacked' versions will make a mess of version control.kuzami wrote:I don't have much experience with skinning, but I will tryEvilDragon wrote:Seems like graphics are embedded into the DLL, so you can pry it open with a tool like ResHacker, export the graphics, and edit away in Photoshop or the like, then replace resources and repack into DLL.Will release it here if it gets good
Something is cooking: RAGNAROK - RELEASED !!!

It's easy to swap images with ResHacker, though. So perhaps might be a cool thing for Björn to implement some sort of skinability instead?
I for one would love a darker skin.

i will reskin a plugin if the gui is absolutely atrocious, or sometimes if asked (the OBXA skin)kuzami wrote:I don't have much experience with skinning, but I will tryEvilDragon wrote:Seems like graphics are embedded into the DLL, so you can pry it open with a tool like ResHacker, export the graphics, and edit away in Photoshop or the like, then replace resources and repack into DLL.Will release it here if it gets good
the Ragnarok gui is quit good and don't see why anyone would want to change it.

I have no idea if Björn is willing to implement full skinning, my feeling is that he is more akin to put his time into developing his DSP codebase. But He'll chime in about that some time.EvilDragon wrote:It's easy to swap images with ResHacker, though. As for a darker skin option, I can't say too much now but let's say that's a possibility
For obvious reasons I think the Ragnarök skin quite good as welllayzer wrote:i will reskin a plugin if the gui is absolutely atrocious, or sometimes if asked (the OBXA skin)

I think the GUI is part of the synth as a whole, like with hardware. Only when there are serious problems with a skin I would use reskinning. The only synth I use regularly, with a new skin, is Oatmeal. And that is not because the original skin is butt ugly (which it definitely is), but because the LimeFlavor skin I use is seriously more ergonomic and has the controls laid out in a better configuration. I can find everything much easier then with the original skin. Now, apart from taste in colors and such, Ragnarök's GUI is very well laid out, not because I made it
As for the alternative OBXd skin, I got that from you because it was available and I liked it, not because I needed it to use OBXd. I like the original skin as well, it's very usable and looks real good too

Agreed from my point of view (again I don't speak for Björn). That way the dll is not redistributed and no 'uncontrolled versions' are floating around the web.Kriminal wrote:If someone makes a diff skin and uploads the images only, theres no problem. Its then up to the individual to make his own .dll

I think the license contained in the ZIP archives of my plugs is pretty clear (does anyone read it at all?kuzami wrote:I don't have much experience with skinning, but I will tryWill release it here if it gets good
Another part specifically for Ragnarök says:[...] You may NOT distribute, sell, rent, or modify this software or any accompanying files without permission from the author. [...]
Hans Peter owns the rights to the GUI images. And he says:Copyright © 2013-2014 by
Hans Peter Willems (CrimsonWarlock aka TechnoGremlin)
Björn Arlt @ Full Bucket Music
So it looks as if Kriminal's option is a sound one since CrimsonWarlock somehow gave his permission.crimsonwarlock wrote:Agreed from my point of view (again I don't speak for Björn). As for potential future skinning options: I won't say "never" but it's definitely not planned yet.
CrimsonWarlock is right, I'm more interested in the sound...
Cheers, Björn

This has been discussed before, and there's even a FAQ-item about that in the manualKriminal wrote:The current gui looks fine to me, tho i would make the logo smaller and add more knobs (vel > vca, vel > vcf etc)
Also, the absence of velocity has been discussed, and is also explained in the manual. This is version 1.x and that one is simply in 'feature freeze' and updates are aimed at stability and correct operation (which is pretty much standard version management procedure). However, nothing is set in stone for possible future 'major version' updates
As a side-note on the velocity: I never missed it in the hardware version because the synth is first and foremost aimed at big lead sounds. Back in the days it was my alternative for a MiniMoog (that I seriously couldn't afford). Now, when I'm doing sound design for the presets, the absence of velocity is rather inspiring, pushing me to see what I can do with the instrument within its (minor) limitations. For example doing brass-like sounds without having sawtooth waves available is somewhat of a challenge, and the more fun because of that.
The point I'm trying to make is this: people don't seem to approach an instrument for what it is, and what they could do with it. Instead it's compared feature-wise to other stuff and we go on to discussing what is absent, basically to see if we can get the synth to match most of what's out there already. Now what is the use for that. I, for one, don't need yet another synth that does it all and can do everything. I have those. I like to have (additional) instruments that bring something different and exciting, and Ragnarök does exactly that for me, and going from the overall reactions on the web, many others. I owe an incredible big thanks to Björn for persevering with me and bringing this to the free availability for everyone

'Fair enough' back at youKriminal wrote:Yes, i understand all that, and fair enough. I was just saying.... as we were talking about the gui
By the way, does this mean you decided to try Ragnarök
I would like to hear what you think about the sound.
