Thanks a lot. The new version needs helluva less CPU. Now I'm running almost 20 instances and there is just a slight CPU hit. So I bet I could run about 80 - 100mcaitch wrote:@deft_bonz: Have you ever tried the latest AU version? This should fix the CPU overloading issue (see below and posts on page 7).

I think someone else made the point back a ways in this thread that it's generally necessary to use EQ (which are filters) and compression to achieve a good, pro sounding mix. That is correct. I feel like part of this competition is to produce a great sounding track, and that means mixing to the highest possible standard. Using a compressor, an adaptive limiter and some eq on the mix bus does not change the sounds of the synth, but it certainly helps the overall production.psmacmur wrote:You have a very good point there. As a noob, I was afraid to touch distortion and filters, and would in fact turn filters off if they existed on e.g. a delay. And my tracks sucked. Eventually, I saw a track with blatant bitcrusher use make it to the top 5 so I started using distortion (though either for saturation or as a send effect) and now I filter all the things (via EQ). Much nicer mixes and somewhat improved scores. So yeah: black & white rules are much better for new entrants, and we do get a fair number of those each month, which is great and should be encouraged.Gamma-UT wrote: The big problem with this is that the voter doesn't necessarily know how a particular sound was achieved and I think it works against the newer entrants, which is where I think some of the comments about it being a bit of an insiders' stitch-up have come from. It can seem that some stalwarts get away with a bit more rule-bending than others.
A wonderful thing about the OSC is that we have to wear many hats. We are sound designers, composers, audio engineers and producers. I don't think the rules are meant to stifle any of those categories, and becoming more draconian would certainly step on our ability to make good mixes.
I'm personally against using distortion, bit-crushing, etc... as I think it does change the character of the sound, so I choose not to use those effects. That's just a personal choice and it makes the competition more fun for me. If someone else feels that using those effects are necessary to the production of their track and they are comfortable that it does not change the character of the sound dramatically, that's ok by me -- this is a friendly competition. If someone overuses effects the track will probably sound crappy and they will get poor scores.

I suppose this kinda went unnoticed, but I have submitted some presets.

Whether or not these presets are of use for you guys is up to you,
- 2-parter Kick-Drum
- House Organ
- Tremolo Noise Synth (Percussive)
- Deep Chorus Pad
just thought I might add some of my favorites from my track.

By the way, don't miss these articles from Sound on Sounds Synth Secrets series.
They offer some insight in how the JX10 (basically JX8 x 2) can pretty closely make an acoustic piano sound and explain the different cross modulation modes as well as most other features.
I use a slightly modified version of the result from these myself. Have not included the layered patches in the presets above though since it's trivial to make it work by just copying the parameters from the articles.

WOW.
You know what? I would love to hear how it sounds! Sadly there aren't any sound samples ( and definitely no banks for PX-8X ) of the synthesized Piano - If anybody tried that out, please share it.

Hey, that sounds like a fun challenge. That PG-8x is already a blast! I wished my masterkeyboard wasn't broken, so now I have to do oldschool pattern editing, but heck... it's great!
I'm using MuLab to do this and I read in the rules that it's ok to use the DAW's effects (I know, no pitching stuff or the likes). I hope you forgive me, if I'm asking, but may I use a delay or even a reverb that is totally done inside the DAW?
Other than that, this sounds really exciting and I'm already getting started!

Yep. You can also find freeware fx for those, if you like.Taron wrote:may I use a delay or even a reverb that is totally done inside the DAW?

Speaking of free Reverbs, after reading the SOS articles mehum linked, I'm itching to synthesize some piano sounds. Would PSP PianoVerb be allowed in OSC, or does its tuning ability make it banned?

Recall, the rule that allowed effects which include a secondary modulation function are currently allowed, as long as the modulation is minimal. This is a tricky one, as it "generates reverberation using twelve string operators", which sounds a bit different than normal reverbs, more like it's another synth. I would probably vote no in the latter case. But I suspect if it sounds like a normal reverb and isn't really adding pitch by oscillator, it might be okay. If it's distinctly adding pitched sounds generated by itself, it probably is across the line to me.psmacmur wrote:Speaking of free Reverbs, after reading the SOS articles mehum linked, I'm itching to synthesize some piano sounds. Ah, that's excellent! I'll make it my "extra" challenge to only use DAW internals then!z.prime wrote:Yep. You can also find freeware fx for those, if you like.Taron wrote:may I use a delay or even a reverb that is totally done inside the DAW?

Hi all.
I've had a go at designing some sounds with this, so here is the link to 59 patches created so far:-

Fun stuff, Richard! Many of them sound totally classic, haha, strange flashbacks to me!

I'm doing some weirder stuff with this thing right now, especially trying to noodle in some decent drums. That's not quite as easy after all.
But the synth is SUPER easy...really fun to play with the basics again like that. Good exercise!
Oh, thanks, of course, Rich! I'm really curious what people are doing with this!
...I do feel like I'm stuck in the past, though, already scared of the Trap stuff or what ever you guys will do?!
