You're welcome! You should ind all info here: https://www.steinberg.net/licensing/
"Might" because I really didn't feel like reading all that :-)
Something I completely forgot about: you can actually authorise a computer without putting it online.

At the very beginning of the new licensing system, there was a "refresh" needed every 30 days, and was one activation only IIRC, but it was pulled almost immediately on (vocal) request from the users.

Yes, Backbone is indeed a nice piece of software. It's deeper that I thought, check out the demo before committing (so you can also check out how licensing works ;-) )

To anyone with some solid time & experience using Backbone: is this genuinely useful for creating new drum and percussion sounds? If you already have a large collection of the usual one shot suspects (Goldbaby, WA, SFM, Black Octopus), does Backbone provide a convenient creative toolbox for transforming them into distinctly different new material?

Also saw Simon's earlier post with a video where he re-synthesized a cittern sample. Has anyone tried building an instrument in HALion (or similar) using tonal instrument samples transformed through Backbone?

Post

Can I load a vocal sample chop with Backbone, and then play it with the midi pianorol at different pitches? Thanks!

Post

I just loaded a WAV pluck sample, and is playable--pitched for every key on the keyboard.
Doing nothing is only fun when you have something you are supposed to do.

I like this sort of thing.
Don't F**K with Mr. Zero.

How does it compare with Visco?

Post

Very different workflow from visco. Does some tricks that visco doesn't. Other than both doing spectral resynthesis they aren't especially similar. Backbone is more about layering and making chromatically playable percussion. Visco is more about morphing and making drum kits.

Very Good!

Wow! I've been tempted to pick it up a couple times and never pulled the trigger. I'm glad I waited!

Likewise, I trialed it and found it useful for manipulating drum samples but thought it was a lot of money for my needs. Just nabbed it for the cost of a reduced sample pack plus discount!

Oh wow thanks for the heads up! You can actually buy something like a preset pack for as little as $5 and get backbone. That's amazing. Been thinking of getting for a long time.

Ditto. Thanks. :tu: 8) I've been impressed with and wanted to explore the resynthesis and time-stetching potential this offers, particularly with non-percussive samples, so getting it for free with a $20 purchase was sweet indeed.
I'm not a musician, but I've designed sounds that others use to make music. http://soundcloud.com/obsidiananvil

I have Backbone as part of Steinberg's Absolute collection and was a bit shocked to see that offer. :o
A true no-brainer for anyone with even the slightest interest.
