Anything about MUSIC but doesn't fit into the forums above.

I did a beta for the english to japanese translation at google. this is what I came up with:

不必要なpolemic 。

copy and paste then google japanese to english. too bad polemic didn't work. I'm a nerd.

I think this could be a record breaker in terms of speed.

Aw shucks!

I'll even go one further. The quote comes from Varèse's lecture notes, this one from a 1962 lecture entitled "The Electronic Medium". They are excerpted in an anthology I just picked up called Audio Culture: Readings in modern music edited by Christoph Cox and Daniel Warner.

I rarely read anthologies, usually prefer the original whole texts, but this book is very nicely put together and starts from what could be considered a good beginner's point into understanding different approaches to music developed over the last century.

Cheers,
Steve

I find this to be an excellent observation.
Well, well.

Hello Sickle.

Pleased to make your acquaintance.

koorby wrote:KvR reminds me a lot of the audition phase of one of those TV talent shows, like American/UK/Australian Idol, or X-Factor etc. You'll get people standing in front of three judges and they'll offer what they feel is a stunning performance and a demonstration of their vocal virtuosity. Unfortunately for them, their utter self-belief and conviction that they have real talent completely clouds the fact that they can't sing, can't hold pitch, are tone-deaf and look like a feral gypsy dragged in from the London Underground. Of course, when the judges have the audacity to tell them they suck, they're often presented with tantrums and accusations of having no idea of how to judge true talent. It's quite amusing really.

Of course, one in a thousand of those people walk in front of the judges and even from the TV into my loungeroom they give me goose pimples, such is their awesome, raw talent on display.

So to me, KvR is like one of those shows; a hellavu lot of the <cough>, er music sucks shit, but damn there are some bloody amazing musicians here who should have had recording contracts ages ago.
Excellent observation! The music industry doesn't run on the hit makers, it runs on the wannabes. They're the ones who pay the bills for most studios.

To me, the whole ambient/soundscape thing is like the musical equivalent of abstract expressionism in visual art. Some dig it, some don't. I tend to take ambient/soundscape music more seriously when it's done by a musician who has the knowledge/skill to make other types of music as well, but CHOSE to experiment with ambient/soundscapes. But if it's done by your typical knob-tweaker who could never do anything other ambient/soundscapes, then I tend to not take it seriously.

I feel music is like the people behind it.. regardless of what I think about the music itself.. I still feel it should be respected.

I dislike lots of genres and widely known artists/groups that are popular here.. and lots of people dislike the styles, forms, and musicians I particulary enjoy.. However, I still realize there was an underlying effort to form, create, and express.. and thats what I respect. and thats even if the music and singing is coming from the likes of David Bowie :| :hihi:

Regarding plectrums: A friend of mine caught a plectrum at a concert, thrown by someone we both truly admire (John Mann of Spirit of the West, and solo work). He didn’t want to lose it, so he put it in the only place he knew a plectrum wouldn’t get lost—through the soundhole of his guitar! We all know what a bitch it is trying to get one of those out.

Regarding ambient bollocks: A lot of that is because Vurt puts out roughly 45% of the music in the Café. ;)

Random note: someone said “sexiphone” instead of Saxophone. I like that. :D

Random note 2: someone said, “fucktard”

Smartest thing ever said regarding forum behaviour: “I tend to stay out of threads like this because the originator who poses the question is not usually looking for answers, they are just supplying us with their opinions, so any response will never be accepted by them.”

Regarding nerds: Every time I do something silly for my students’ amusement, and they say, “Mr. P, I bet you were a nerd!” I respond with, “maybe, but I’m happily old enough to not care any more either way.” (or something similar) Strangely, the very same students often say things like, “Mr. P, you’re the coolest teacher ever!”

But who pays money to studios these days anyway? I guess the only time I'd spend real money on a studio is for A-grade mastering or a complex live instrument or vocal recording. I figure most of the wannabees are making demo CD's at home.

Yep, pretty much sums up my feelings.

I don't know what "nerd music" is, and I don't know why so many people want to argue their pointless opinions with others.

Music is an expression that is different for everyone. Some people like rigid, structured music, and others like weird experimental stuff. Some people like prog rock, others like dance music. Whatever, man, just don't make one of these stupid OMG DEBATE topics.

The topic creator was just asking for trouble by saying "Nerd music".
