Hmm, I somehow find the above information hard to believe. I think if the above was going to happen i would hope for the same degree of detailed modelling for all the components. I would guess there is no cpu out there to run it practically anyway? I do dream of something like a Cytomic SH-2 one day though.Funkybot's Evil Twin wrote:In it's current state, it's already most of the way there. So sticking 3 Osc's in front of The Drop with a few extra doodads for good measure would probably be a relatively small amount of work for Andy once The Drop is done. Then he gets to re-use a lot of prior work and make a second commercial plugin out of it. In 1990's America we'd say, "Mo money, mo money, mo money!"

As long as it's finished before the hardcore materialists tear down the planet, so we can at least get some quality time with it before we go out with a whimper.

Actually Funkybot is right on the money, but it depends on how you define "most of the way there" as yes there is still a lot of design and modelling work.nrosko wrote:Hmm, I somehow find the above information hard to believe. LFO2 is already an anti-aliased oscillator and the tech behind it can create any arbitrary oscillator shapes made up of any combination of lines, exponential curves and sine shapes. For example a sawtooth is just a line going up with a jump down every now and again, a square wave is a horizontal line with a jump over now and again. So LFO2 is a great general and very clean oscillator, which is great for modulation duties, but in a synth you may want a little more grit. So the bandlimiting isn't an issue, and neither is the general algorithms behind solving lots of different circuit equations.
The focus of a synth product is completely different to that of an effect plugin, it isn't a matter of just adding an oscillator to The Drop. I would need to design the synth from scratch, which includes designing and modelling the oscillators, modelling oscillator noise (which is a big part of the sound of analog oscillators), and designing and modelling the envelopes. The Drop has envelope followers like those found on the Moog Taurus, which is great since they can smooth out audio signals as well as trigger signals, but for a synth I think dedicated trigger based ADSRs are more useful. I can literally re-use almost all of the filter code for a synth product, but I would probably fine tune a few things for use in a synth.
I've invested a lot of time in the background tech to tackle all this, The Drop is really just the first plugin to use it all, but there are many more to come, and they will be much quicker to develop and release from now on.

Hi Andy,
just downloaded the test Version. There are no presets installed with it. Do you have some? Of course I checked out the filter without presets but I think I am missing some functionality
You should create a Synth with those great state of the art 0dff, I guess then Urs will get tears in his eyes.
cheers, ingo

I know there is a lot of buzz around the term 0dff (zero delay feedback filter), but I choose not to take part in this because to me the terminology is meaningless and confusing. Please feel free to continue using the terminology yourself since it is quite widely used, but be aware of some of the issues:
To start with filters do delay the signal (phase delay) and feed it back, that is fundamental to their operation and it is how they do any filtering at all and how they create resonance! Also one of the most commonly used filter algorithms around is called a direct form 1 biquad, and these are in fact "0dff", so almost every pugin ever released already contains "0dff" filters - so any plugin manufacturer can quite honestly add this to their feature list if they want, since this is actually the case. There are many more reasons as well that I won't go into here. As far as I will ever go in describing the algorithms in my plugins is to say something vague like: "... uses same high quality algorithms used in circuit simulation packages but optimised for real time use."
I believe that the methods used in writing a plugin shouldn't matter. What does matter is how good the plugin sounds, so if you are happy with the sound of The Drop then I've done my job right

The only downside to buying now is the potential for compatibility concerns once it hits 1.0. I'd almost expect that projects that used the beta wouldn't load presets from the 1.0 version. But who knows, Andy may have a solution. Maybe he'll use a different plugin ID, or has some other way of ensuring compatibility.nrosko wrote:its very stable you could get it now, i think its the same price either way.
