so even if this physically modeled vst that guido is working on does end up sounding more like a trumpet than a real trumpet, it won't matter so long as people like you are still around saying, "hey, check this out! i made another clip of me trading fours with my real trumpet and fake trumpet! isn't that neat?"

I thought it was neat. If he enjoyed doing it, then what is wrong with that?
I think I agree with most of what you are saying but it sounds like you don't like the fact that people are excited about the synthesis technology itself.

Beta3 is the latest, the audio demos in this thread are all of them, in order.

Convincing is a relative term of course. Quantizing that into a yes/no ultimato i'd have to say no, i play trumpet and i wouldnt have any problem soptting it under any length of scrutiny.

compared to sampled brass i like milestone better, but ive liked physics models over samples for a long time. samplers steal the tone but they cant do anything about behavior. each tool has its place.

on its own merits i think its got a lot of cool nuances already and its very fun to play, theres a lot goin on there that you do feel connected to an instrument that responds.

Hey Tony, your analysys of the trumpet physics is very useful for the development of this plugin, and I've read carefully almost all what you were discussing of with the other members. I've tried to improve the effect given by static air cycle inside the trumpet tube (what I simply call "resonance") but the result still isn't what I want. Btw, a little step further me thinks.

Hi Guido! Just tried out B4. It sounds very nice. Although in the unmuted horn, I always here vibrato despite the fact that I can bring more in by either the Mod wheel or aftertouch. The muted version does not suffer from this. It is indeed more detailed in the attack portion and sound more realistic. I still like the brightness of b2. This is just an outstanding acomplishment! (I am still hoping you will add fingered portamento as is on the Yamaha VL!) Again, great work!!!

Along the lines of jcn7's comment about the vibrato, there is a bit too much of it. For us non-controller players a vibrato attack-delay and amount controls would be a great addition. And we could still use the modwheel to control the expression.

Guido, the more I play this, the more I believe your model is just about right. Just need to fix that vibrato issue on the non muted horn. I should be able to only hear vibrato when I trigger it by mod wheel or aftertouch. This model IS FANTASTIC!!!! I prefer it to my Yamaha VL's and my Korg Oasys PCI's. I love the attack now! Great stuff!

some interesting stuff ive been reading in the wind list::

Yamaha and Stanford University co-own the patents to waveguide physical
modeling, for wind and string instruments, say. (Not percussion, I think)
The patents can't be licensed without Yamaha's permission, but are probably
quite willing to lisense them to 3rd parties, although not necessarily to
Akai.

There are other approaches not patented by Yamaha - e.g. The one developed
by IRCAM that is in Arturia Brass. Brass is apparently not ready for
prime time, although this is probably not be due to a fundamental limitation
of the approach. It could be related to the attempt to make it playable
with a keyboard. The first version of the VL was more limited than it came
to be, and it took ayears to develop sets of parameters that sounded really
good.

i tested this thing out tonight at LeSouk on the lower east side in NYC tonight, and i must say that it sounds extremely extremely good in a club setting. much better than anything i've ever been able to coax out of the vl70 trumpet models. i did have to invert the BC curve a bit to have a greater range from soft blowing to hard, but other than that, a little reverb and little compression, it was fantastic. i look forward to playing with v4 tonight at my other gig.

well, they really dug it. club goers tend to be able to relate more to emulative sounds, but get off on the synthetic stuff so the trumpet went over extremely well...very full sounding, unlike the one that is in the vl70, which usually has to be slathered in effects to be presentable. and, not insignificantly, this thing is so precious on the cpu that i am working on layering a couple of them and running them thru some miles davis esque effects for my gig tonight.

to be completely honest, i will probably use this thing for 50% of my sounds tonight.
