The simultaneous waveform / spectral view thing comes from SoundBooth (from version 1 of that). I would expect some convergence in features between the two apps given that the development team seems the same (or substantially so).

A mention of this video on another forum with close contacts with Adobe lead to the thread being locked, so that would indicate that it's genuine.

If they come up with a feature that's new to Audition, seriously useful, and which isn't in Reaper then I'll upgrade. Otherwise, no point (for me - of course it's a personal requirements decision).

I honestly don't care what they do, as long as they make it much simpler and easier to load and record virtual instruments in the multi-track view. For me the program is perfect except for that.

Looking again at that youtube video, I notice that where there is currently the choice between Edit/Multitrack/CD views, there is now apparently just a choice between Waveform/Multitrack views. I wonder whether CD burning has been moved elsewhere in the programme...? ... I certainly hope it has not been scrapped, as this is one of the key functionalities for me. In fact I would prefer to see this area improved, not removed.

Audition 4 for Mac is confirmed by Adobe. Public Beta available end of 2010.

I've just posted this on AudioMasters and I'm pasting it here to as readership of both forums probably doesn't overlap much.

8 hold positions on the frequency analyser (up from 4)

Opening files in the background (presumably they mean creating pk files and/or doing internal conversions

Better integration of edit view and multitrack

Frequency analysis in multitrack
Multichannel mixing in the mixer

Improved NR UI
Diagnostics panel

Generally seems to be a matter of playing to Audition's strengths rather than trying to compete in markets which are very well and very cheaply covered by other programs. However, the video obviously doesn't show all the new stuff on offer.

Jason's ability to make some bog standard stuff sound new and exciting is pretty remarkable!

No mention of midi... so either they've dropped that or they are not planning to extend midi functionality much further. I personally hope that the ability to use midi instruments played live alongside real ones is at least retained. That doesn't require any actual midi editing functionality, just midi record and playback.

Will I upgrade in due course? Well, only if that will enable me to do stuff which I personally want to do, which I can't already do now with the current version plus other software. In other words, everyone's mileage varies.

Cheers for compiling the list. The other article that was linked suggests that the full feature set hasn't actually even been decided yet (e.g. it states there that AA will host VST but not yet confirmed about AU and RTAS...) so I'm guessing that having concentrated on Soundbooth over the last year or two the team are now just returning their focus to Audition for a time and looking at ways to improve it. Nopw's the time to get your feature requests heard!

Not totally sure where I stand on this, as I found MIDI in AA practically unusable. On the other hand, I'm not keen to see them actually remove functionality, especially as *so far* there aen't any big new features for windows users. The Mac port is the only headline here so far.

One thing that slightly disturbed me in the videos is to see that the CD Burn window appears to not be there. I hope that either they have not yet (but will) added it into the Mac version, or that they have decided to imbed it in a menu somewhere. I would be appalled to see it go - if anything I would like to see it improved - and for me it would be a dealbreaker...

...I'll be there. I had considered switching to Wavelab as everything seemed too quiet on the Audition front and I had enjoyed working in Cubase since buying v5 last year. However, Cubase 5.5 is buggy here, very disappointing, and I can see myself working entirely with Propellerhead Record/Reason and Audition 4 this time next year. But as you say, time will tell...

Re Audition and midi - it seems to me to be perfectly valid to have VSTi support without a midi sequencer/editor. There's no logical difference in using VSTi instruments in the same way as stand-alone electronic instruments with line-out sockets connected to a soundcard, or using real instruments captured with a mic.

Of course some VSTi instruments are designed to be sequenced rather than played 'acoustically' but many others, notably piano-type instruments and organs, are intended to emulate real instruments, and sequencing is no more essential to their use than to the instruments they emulate. So I hope at least that much midi function is retained in the new version.

Actually, the Adobe Labs website said a public beta would be xmas at the earliest. If it's 2011 before it actually happens, that process doesn't rap up neatly in a month or two, so the soonest we will likely see Audition 4 in a ready for prime time version can realistically be one year from now, based on information at hand.

The sad part is PC users that have been the exclusive base for Audition (and before) are held at bay until it's ready for Mac. That's very aggravating. Mac should launch when Mac is ready but there's no need to hold everyone else hostage.

I realize this post is several years old, but thanks for adding this info Headquest... This is a cool effect that has sealed the deal for me. I'm going to be getting V3 now.

Question, do you know when this feature was added to AA? Was this an added feature AFTER V1.5 or is this in V1.5?

Thanks, and I suspect Bones might re-consider or has possibly purchased Audition after reading this thread. Even though he's negative about Adobe, they do have excellent applications.

Ozpeter I haven't seen or heard of a PC version of AA4 in the pipeline. Has this been truly established or are we just speculating this to be the case?

I would hate to see PC's not getting an update while Mac gets theirs. That would us PCers jealous you know.

Hey Dennis, this feature is in v1.5, along with a spectacular FFT vocoder. Beware the processing time though (vocoder), it's not a heavily optimized process. In fact, Adobe doesn't even support development of their native plugins anymore, and recommend everyone use VST.

One thing AA needs desperately is a 64-bit build, and a complete rewrite of their plugins for multi threading.

Another less drastic thing would be a way to move the play cursor inside of a selection without having to use the transport, as this can only do 8x scrub. This is useful to me for chopping up very large files.

Any news on Adobe Audition 4?
