The POD HD has certainly perked my ears up a bit. I hear improvements. I entered Guitar Center with a healthy bit of skepticism; seeing they had a POD HD500 hooked up to a crappy practice amp. So, off I went and honestly...it felt pretty good :) At least SOMETHING was different and it's a better sound (to my ears). The models feel more open and it rounds off the high end nicely (unlike many others). The sound still suffers from the trapped-in-a-digital-world type of "cramped" feeling and it didn't blow me away but...it does sound like a step forward. 8)

Vettaville just posted some interesting sound clips with the HD here.

Your thoughts? Is it better? Are we moving forward :?:

here's a lame little clip I did on the fly. I think it sounds good, so tell me how wrong I am.

@pod HD: I owned one for about 3 hours (lol). There wasn't anything wrong with it, but I didn't feel I could get anything out of it that I couldn't already with what I had. That coupled with the fact that using it in the daw environment isn't as flexible and I think it's a hard sell for 500 bucks. Just my 2c.

Sounds VERY nice indeed :hihi: What is the chain? Is this the POD HD?

well, that is a great intro, good intro length, and bitchin tone. Very cool setup.

and have a happy new year. Take it easy. Relax.

Well, the "hihi" has me wondering if you are poking a bit of fun BUT the chain is an ibby 3520, motu zbox, maudio profire, GR4 (coolplex and the boss emu distortion) and RP verb. Quick and dirty just as an example.

I'm sure I can get a decent enough tone out of podHD, but in fact I took mine back after 3 hours (yes, I said 3 hours) because there was nothing about it that made me sound/feel any better than what I had. Instant savings of 500 bones imho. :)

Cool. I hope you have a dark coloured theme for GR4 so it kind of fits with everything else :D

the zbox sure is a nifty solution for impedance matching

just curious, how many tweaked kind of project go to sounds/settings do you have in GR4 ??

Post

Probably about 10. This may sound really strange but I've gotten into constructing from scratch based on the mood of what I'm doing. I really like using dry combos and having the verb/delay on a different bus and allowing those to provide space.

Post

yep, the 'one size fits all' approach doesn't do it with verb, the last step. Starting from scratch with a project sound seems right. Think in the past I've been too impatient with amp sims, and gotten shite results.

If you haven't tried it, Flux's free Stereo Tool is cool for placing things spatially, left/right, forward/backwards, after the verb.

EXcellent. Thanks for that FATC!

I found that the 'problem' with amp sims (aka amp emus or whatever the marketing dept say they are) is just a matter of gain structure. The [EG:] elusive creamy semi-clean warm tone isn't impossible IME, it's just very problematic.

Recorded music is an illusion and simulating an amp tone is a mixing problem like anything else IMO.
It would be noticably more work to get the feeling of *enough air* pushing a big speaker out of a computer setup but I think it's acheivable, though if you're playing live I guess it's kind of a weird thing to want to do.

An embarrassment of riches, to me is an odd thing to complain about.

Kind of thinking aloud here, but amp sim, hardware mics or lines, hardware modellers...all share having to undergo an A to D conversion, with a signal that is very complex.
Even good converters might 'dumb down' the signal, and the differences between methods, to an extent ?

No, no...I just adopt hihi for my own purposes cos that smiley is too cute :hihi: It really does sound good (to me anyway). Surprised it's GR4 though :? I can't seem to achieve anything great out of it

Astute observation. However I'm certain, without doubt that the placeboadoubterhavenorealunderstandingofthephysicsofsoundcauseeverythingsoundsthesameevenwirehanger-ers will be along shorty to stab steely knives and kill the poor beast :hihi:
