yes, regrettably i've found that no other set of tools works for tuning the thing :D
Seriously, the math involved varies on a mode by mode level, and I would only count on the 2Tap and 8Tap modes to get any sort of reliable pitch shifting. The presets that have "pitch shifting" were tuned by ear. I have found that higher levels of FEEDBACK are invaluable for this process, as any slight tuning variations will be multiplied by the feedback process.

on a related note, do the modulation waveforms for those two modes sport some kind of asymmetry?

This ain't no well behaved pitch shifter. It's a GLITCH SHIFTER!!!!

No, all the modulation waveforms are symmetrical, except for the 6-tap random mode. Triangle waveforms or multi-phase sines for the slow waveforms, sine waves or multi-phase sine waves for the vibrato waveforms. Any asymmetry comes from the inherent weirdness of a triangle waveform with a large amount of modulation depth. The amount of depth that will result in a desired pitch shift ration when the triangle is going "up" might result in some ugly pitch shift ration when going "down." For that matter, the "down" pitch shift might result in the signal slowing down to nothing, or just a few DC rumblings. Or going backwards.

The OverMod knob should have a tooltip that says "HEYRE BE DRAGONS."

Here is a little Guzheng (Sonic Couture) Jam I played this morning drowned in some ÜberMod DiffusionSpaceShiftLushness...

Experiment processing the voice of an actor shouting "Macbeth" and running around on stage with 1 instance of ÜberMod - these are samples I made for a theatre production some years ago - rather spooky shit...

this really speaks for itself...both examples, thanks !

I think for me Ubermod is the perfect compliment to Valhalla Room as far as reverb goes - i was looking for something a bit more obvious for certain reverb tasks, i love the reverb presets in Ubermod and the built-in EQ makes it easy to tailor the sound so its not too big or to open up the low pass filter and make it sound huge!

I'm glad you're liking it for reverb!

The original idea for the Diffusion section was to add thickness to echo repeats, as opposed to creating reverb effects. The diffusion network size was fixed at a fairly short overall length, similar to the 6-Voice Chorus/Echo in the PCM70 (I think those diff delays were around 20 to 25 msec total). At some point, I figured out that having a Diffusion Size parameter was useful, but the existing diffusion network sounded kinda crappy at larger sizes. So I doubled the complexity of the diffusion network, using some code from ValhallaShimmer, but with delay lengths tailored towards a smooth diffusion response at all sizes (versus the delays in Shimmer which are aimed towards getting that weird slow attack sound).

The ÜberMod reverbs are definitely more "colored" than ValhallaRoom. I like to set the Diffusion size around 200 msec, in 2TapChorus mode, with DELAY around 10-15 msec, and use the FEEDBACK parameter to control the decay time of the reverb. Crank the DEPTH parameter, set the EQ Mode to Dark, and roll of the high frequencies, and you can get a good generic modulated reverb.

Adding drive to the signal path can be useful in creating reverbs that decay away in a manner closer to tape echos. Some of the Lexicon 224 examples I have heard display similar characteristics, due to the limited headroom of the fixed point processor in that box (and the high internal gain of some of the signal notes in the older Lexicon algorithms). The Lexicon and other fixed point boxes would have hard clipping, as opposed to the antialiased soft clipping used in ÜberMod.

I have started writing the ÜberMod documentation. Over the next week, I will be putting posts on my blog, explaining the controls, algorithms, and overall ÜberArchitecture. I'll get to tips and tricks as time permits.

The first blog entry discusses the high level controls, and provides a basic overview of the GUI organization:

I'm currently working on some bug fixes for the first ÜberUpdate.

The biggest bug I have found so far (and other people have reported) shows up when switching modes in the Win 32 VST. A few of the modes will display the incorrect name when selected (DualEnsemble, 16Phase). The algorithm seems to be switching modes correctly, but displaying the wrong name. Anyway, I think I have tracked down and fixed this bug. For you code geeks, I was using int() when I should have been using floor().

Another bug that I will fix is in Pro Tools only: When playing a mono track, putting ÜberMod into bypass only passes audio from the left channel. It turns out this is part of the Juce RTAS framework, so I'll change the code there and report the bug/solution on the Juce forum.

I'll also look into how the delays reset when changing modes, and whether this is necessary. It might make cool sounds if I don't reset the buffers, but my guess is that I am resetting them for a reason. Like, things were probably blowing up if not reset. I started work on ÜberMod back in late May 2011, so it is hard to remember every little aspect of why I put some code somewhere. :D

Any other bugs people have found that I should address with this first update?

I just put up a new blog post, describing the ValhallaÜberMod modes:

http://valhalladsp.wordpress.com/2012/0 ... the-modes/

This ended up being a pretty long post. I tried to describe the different chorus/delay modes as concisely as possible, but there's a lot going on in there. I think that ValhallaRoom was easier to write about, as I could describe the basic reverb idea in one place, and the various reverb modes could be described in somewhat abstract terms, since the low level details wouldn't necessary be descriptive. With ÜberMod, the low level details are descriptive and necessary - a 6 tap mode sounds different than 32 taps, and the different modulation options make a pretty big difference to the sound.

Sean, no new bugs to report, but I really want you to bundle up some of the new presets you've posted here and on Gearslutz and include them in the next point update. There's some seriously good stuff to be had there.

Thanks for the post on the modes too, the modes were hard for me to wrap my head around with Ubermod. Your post does a good job answering a lot of my unasked questions on the different modes.
