I don't think this. I was making a joke with my "preset songs" post.

While I personally enjoy doing original sound design, I often use presets while composing and occasionally I keep a preset in the final track.

There I confessed, I too live the Preset Life.

In fact, one day I may get a Preset Wife:

I had only problems with preset wifes. I always bought them, and then I blew up the boobies (for customization) too much till they were exploding...

But...$8.95...THIS IS A NO-BRAINER!!!

Actually I already regret posting that because I don't condone a misogynistic view towards women. It was a dumb attempt at humor that misfired.

:dog: Think before you post.

The dumber the humor, the more people are laughing... I always had a problem with too intelligent humor - I'm the only one who understands it! :o

I love these American Comedy Soap Operas where they play this cheap laugh sample every 4 seconds while I'm always thinking about how to interpret the previous joke...

Aww, don't think of it as misogynistic towards women, think of it as loving towards inflatable dolls!

Who doesn't ever start with a preset??
Most (if not all) people open a synth for the first time and listen to the presets, and then go from there, either using them as is, or changing them a bit.

What this thread tells me, is that a synth might be used simply because it has presets. If you find a synth that has few presets (and there are many of them), it's a shame. Because the presets are what get people using the synth in the first place. And those who tweak come after.

I made my website precisely because there weren't many presets available for amSynth. As I started using it, I learned more about it, and was making sounds along the way. Now there are 11 banks of 128 sounds each (you do the math) and now people may use the synth that otherwise would have ignored it.. all because some sounds were made for it! :)

So make sounds for your synths and share them! ;)

Big +1 :)

I won't spend another second on a synth with no/very few presets. As great as it may be, there are tons of others synths that are loaded with new sounds right out of the box.

but, if we look at data collected since presets became the norm, we can clearly see a rise in co2 in the atmosphere and various pollution in the sea.
so its not just opinion that preset use is bad its a scientific fact!

fact!

Thanks idfpower,
sounds like presets are indeed important.. as many people may never use a synth if there aren't nice presets already available.
--So now I truly have my work cut out for me.. with several nice linux synths that just need some presets! :D

Well I guess it depends on the methods ppl use to make music. I for ex need to get in a certain mood and when I do, usually the song writes itself :) But in order not to lose that vibe, I need to work on the fly so I tend to use instruments that are loaded and ready to go. Chances to switch synths after the initial song layout are very slim because I pick certain presets/sounds for a reason. While usually I can find something similar to those very few cool presets a new synth might come up with in the ones I already have so I won't bother to load an instrument just for 1 usable preset. But that's just me.

Post

Don't use presets not very often do I.
I've got nothing to sell...am I on the right site?

Wasn't there a thread with the question why famous artists use mostly Massive (and not MUX  )?

I think it's because of the tons of (usable!) presets. They're occupied more with songwriting than with sound design.

Maybe some real geeks like Martin Solveig are fiddling around with something complex like Synthmaster but the majority of producers want to have instantly-to-use-presets.
