My entry for KVR One Synth Challenge #95: OBXD
https://soundcloud.com/peter-macmurchy/ ... hine-coast
This month's track represents a sincere effort at creating what I call "real music". As you'll hear, I'm a total novice at it. Many thanks to everyone who posted something general or specific about composition; I took as much of the advice on offer as I could. I feel like the result is along the lines of a first year assignment. Clearly, I have a long way to go.
Made in Studio One 3.3.1 x64
55 HY-Mono instances in the project (what, I finally got a newer laptop, had to work those cores)
DAW FX:
Compressor x2
ProEQ x19
Limiter x1
Mixverb x1
Room reverb x1
Spectrum Meter x1
Tricomp x3
Multiband Dynamics x1
VU Meter x1
Free FX:
A1StereoControl-x64 x1
midiPolyphony x1
MJUC Jr x1
Roth Air x6
Sanford Reverb x5
Saturation Knob x4
Spaceship Delay x1
OTT x1
TAL Reverb x1
Tonecarver Delay8 x1
Transient x1
Voxengo Stereo Touch x6
Voxengo Tube Amp x1
WG Doffset x25 (d'oh, some DC probably slipped thru)
DR8
Edit: In case Soundcloud continues to be difficult, here's the OneDrive link: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AhYZUYj6fj0SgfxIk1aE_YiIBhOEcw

Some Words About December 2016 Unfinished Work
I APOLOGIZE for not checking back the last unfinished work (which I had mentioned as not to consider as entry, by the way), not commenting, not voting.
Actually, I had posted for feedback or criticism for improvement of the track.
I was in impression that my unfinished track will not be considered for voting.
Anyway, This forum post is about the track submission for this month.
About My OSC Entry For January 2017
After some hearing related issues in last year, I had almost stopped working with music.
But, it is not very problematic now, so I am again officially entering in OSC after almost a year. It was difficult phase, more psychological than physical perhaps, due to fear of loosing hearing capability.
But, I am feeling happy that the problem is not too worse (i hope) that I can not make electronic music. I feel better now, at least.
Anyway... Getting on topic....
This track is a monochromatic musical experiment completed with only one software synth (as you know..!): HY-Mono by HY-Plugins. This synth is "mono" in nature, so multiple instances are used to create complex sounds.
Basically, This track roams around one theme: Darkness. Giving different shades of it - from mellow to harsh. So, this justifies song title "Monochrome", in my opinion.
Melody created with delay effect rich small bells along with dark distorted bass and slowly added complex sequences gives unique atmosphere to the track. The harmonics rich detuned saw pad sound with flavor of dance music rhythm supports high tempo but simple four on the floor beat.
Of course, It's not pure Techno genre music as seen in tags.
But, it may be termed as "dark and melodic experimental techno". I leave it to the listeners to decide and also invite to let me know best fit genre of this track.
The track is made using seven years old laptop, mixed with cheap headphones only.
Hope you enjoy and like this musical experiment: "Monochrome" of Darkness...!
Comments and Feedback are welcome... As always.. !
If I get some advise and constructive criticism about song arrangement, sound design and mixing/mastering, I would like to recreate this track with other instruments and samples. Please help..!
Thank you for reading this long description and listening to my music. :
Next post goes for technical details about the track ad per requirement of rules.

- Lot of Automation is used (no pitch change automation)
- Used all features of the HY-Mono synth, especially modulation capabilities, delay FX with modulation.
- Used multiple instances of the plugin with small detune to create thicker sounds and applied some distortion fx.
- Drum sounds are created with single instance only, used various FX to control inconsistent sound of Kick, snare, etc.
- All sounds are fresh created from "init" - basic patch.
Thank you.
Best of luck to all participants.
Enjoy ..!

Hey, Dee! I'm glad to hear your hearing is fine again and your track shows that quite well! I like your mix and its sound quite a bit. It feels solid to me. Musically it does quite obviously feature "Darkness", though, I find it a bit simple with a number of missed opportunities to capitalize on the simplicity. Here and there you do some beautiful things with great potential and you followed through nicely, even if you could've taken it to, yet, a higher place. A whole lot of really nicely official analogue type sounds that all fit naturally well together to my ears. I especially like some of your atmospheric sounds, including the gorgeous ending madness in the background... very lovely!
It seems to me that you've jumped back on the horse with great strength and no problem to ride hard. Seems to me, though, you really hold on very tightly, while you could relax a little more, let lose and enjoy the landscape at full sprint, too. Certainly you've gained good strength and it's a pleasure to witness it. GREAT COMEBACK!

Oh .... Thanks, Taron...!!
It feels nice to read positive feedback and encouraging words from a pro like you.
I agree that the track had good base to build. I am continuously trying to develop sound design, tracking, mixing, maintaining desired energy level of the track among other important aspects of production.
But, It still takes too much time for me to properly buildup a track in such a way that it keeps listener awake till end.
However, attempts are on... and will be on... till heart beats and ear hears... to make this complete music production process like smooth horse riding.
Later, I will ask for your suggestions through PM when I remake the track, if you do not mind.
Thanks,
Dee.P.Tree

Voting Time!
FYI, there is 1 tracks at the bottom that has an invalid soundcloud URL. I'll get to the bottom of that soon. If you do not have time to review it later, just leave it unrated.

vot...ed...am I the first?
...ah well! I went through it all with great pleasure!
The blank (not found) track at the end...(I think it read "pagan frequency" or so?!) I just pushed it on 1 so my voting could be completed.
I felt like a collector with the 2 outstanding, purely experimental tracks, hehe, by the way. Not like I'd really dig this stuff, but I did enjoy it no less.
Then there were plenty of quite brilliant tracks, considering the mono challenge, but I did notice that HY-Mono didn't make it easy for anybody to come to a clear, open mix. It's been difficult to embrace that, but some have managed, and some very few have managed to actually reach beyond it, too, which was impressive, creating surprisingly open mixes.
I've had great fun with HY-Mono after all, triggering a different kind of approach for me and stretching my horizon a little bit, at least for myself.
Great job, though, everybody!

I still need more time to finish voting, but I have to respond to comments from Taron:
"Longest Short Journey sounds like a lamb being brought to slaughter." - you got me
It is actually inspired by my short animation from year 2005
"Hmmm...that stuff doesn't live in the some world together somehow." - well sometimes it is. His short journy is consequence of previous events. Audience view is different then "lamb" view in this short moment. He can see those consequences and also his whole life during this event hence Longest Short Journy.
What im trying to achieve is kind of story behind the music. Im not musician and I dont know about music theory and all other music stuff almost nothing. So I have made my own approach to make things - ehm "music". Everything I do is build upon a story. Instead of words I use sounds.
This is also reason why I like your music. Every track of yours is like a book.
Hope I will be able to write "books" like you.

Tahaha, that's too dang cute! Great job on the short!
...even with outtakes!
Well, it's weird, trying to ponder the challenges of making elements of a story work together. Thing is, every piece wants a kind of introduction, but when different elements come together, they affect each other. Let's be extreme and have, for example, fire and ice. Fire melts the ice, water extinguishes the fire, but they don't sit on top of each other without an interaction. Or, some timid victim is being brought to slaughter, the victim won't still be tender and fragile, but fear will create a different edge in their behavior.
When you do this with sound, you change the character of the sound. A soft attack could become a hard attack or a flutter. A warm, round sound could become harder, maybe brighter, almost like through a bandpass, for example. But just as important is that they live in the same kind of mix environment, share a stage. You have to decide their proximity. You have to decide whether you look at the scenario or whether you have the voice of a protagonist in your head, rather than in front of you. This is where storytelling choices are made.
But if you would choose the voice in your head and place that voice on the stage, for example, it would feel wrong.
So...it's all about consistency, connection, character and so on. As a listener, all you want is orientation. But there are many dimensions to this.
I'm trying to tell you how I am thinking, which is just one view, of course. But more than my explicit thoughts, the matters that are thought ABOUT are meant to inspire your exploration, you know.
Telling a story has the added challenge that you may know exactly what's what, but the listener has no idea about any of it. You decide how the listener learns about it all, but things have to make some sense at some point and it's easiest to go at it in a linear fashion, of course.
Little thing goes out into the world, because it wants to become a big thing. It learns that other things are fascinating and becomes curious about even more things. It then finds out that things can go wrong, too, and things happen to the thing. Then it really wants to find out what went wrong, but learns that it went wrong itself and wants to go back home. On the way back home it dawned on it, that this wrong thing is actually following and if he brings this thing home, then all may go wrong and nothing will be save anymore, no refuge, no peace. So it turns around and faces the problem. And on and on... so, very linear.
You know where something is coming from, you find out where its headed, things happen and so on.
But if you leap into a random scene and suddenly have characters that had no introduction right in the middle of some action, it all loses connection.
Man...I'm so tired, sorry. I hope my sleepy rambling was still informative already?!
Anyway, fun short! AND THANK YOU, of course! Stories are wonderful, especially when you just send yourself out on an imaginary adventure and allow yourself to discover what reveals itself to you along the way. I love it very much!

Well thats make sense and also everything else you said. (You can also use words not just soundsTaron wrote:Fire melts the ice, water extinguishes the fire, but they don't sit on top of each other without an interaction.
It is just that Im trying to experiment with everything and something im really want to make fire and ice sit on top of each other without interaction. Like 2 stories at same time that share same "idea" but from different point of view - theory of relativity. Example: Man running fast across the street. From perspective of viewer you think he is running because he is in a hurry and he is out of time and under preassure. But there is another view from runner itself. He is running because he have alot of time and he is actually enjoying this acitivity because it make him relaxed. Almost like too different melodies/tracks playing at same time.
For me it is NOT important to achieve that goal. Important is the way that exists because of this goal. So in the end we always enjoy the ride and not the End.
