Hmm, this is a fun question. I do use a lot of different synths and samplers but if I had to choose, it'd probably be...

1. Digital Suburban Dexed (DX7) —
I still think the DX7 is a messy joy to work with. Dexed is so lightweight that I can get greedy with instances and layering sounds. It's a staple for me for responsive percussive, mallet, EP and weirdo instruments. Works well adding percussive elements to other synths too.

2. nakst ExtraBold —
This is the wavetable synth that I clicked with the most and it's because I can just push it to fun extremes. It can do the traditional stuff great, sure, but... it can make bright clicky bells, dusty pads, nasal leads or digital synthetic faux instruments. This synth is the "beautiful accident" synth for me.

3. KORG M1 —
Perhaps not much of a pure "synth" to some, and perhaps a bit of a nostalgia pick at this point, but whatever. I still just love its pads, its fluffy sounding glittery weirdness and synthetic sounding instruments. I like New Age stuff! :hihi: This just nails that. I've tried a ton of newer KORG and Roland stuff, both software and hardware... but in real use I still go to the M1.

4. e-phonic Invader 2 —
I have a few analog-style synths but I think this one just nails the general sound while being super intuitive to use. It sounds incredible for the fundamental stuff, but you can also push it to unique timbres without it falling apart either. It's like the "no brainer" analog synth for me.

So yeah, I think a FM, wavetable, old sample workstation and subtractive synth covers a decent ground. :ud:

Wow, a list with a surprise.
Would you please give some thoughts on why Surge is in this your list? :)
Sounds great, super versatile, the newer osc and filter models are on par with almost anything else out there, and it has a sophisticated tuning editor and can act as an MTS-ESP master for other synths.

I haven't dived into it as deep as I'd like to because I know Zebra much better but I feel like it has endless potential. Also, I love that it's open source and no company going under can take it down. It's effectively immortal.

Phoscyon 2
Pigments
SE-02 (VST editor, does that count?)
Samples From Mars (Drum Racks, not a VST synth but near enough sort of)

The Samples from Mars synths in Renoise Redux are becoming my go-to, lately.

I can only import .sfz and it doesn't retain the modulations or anything, but the raw tones are sooo nice. I'd much rather find a pulse or square or saw from their samples than most of my plugins, and then start crafting them with the modulations and fx in Redux.

I am missing the last couple years of their packs, so I can't wait until they do another "everything" deal.

And I low key lust for SE-02, too! Someone is selling a Studio Electronix SE-1 on Craigslist here...if it sits for a while, they are getting a low-ball offer.
REAPER + Davinci Resolve Pro on Manjaro KDE. Neve 88m. Focusrite 18i20 2nd gen. Neumann NDH30 headphones. Mics: Telefunken TF39, AT4050, Miktek C7e, EV RE-15. VSTs: u-he Hive 2, F'em, Renoise Redux, Apisonic Speedrum 2.

If I had Diva it would probably be on this list based on what I've seen (and heard).

Why Archangel? I made it, so it does exactly what I want and it's my baby
Releasing my synth Archangel in June!

Depends:

Best sounding:
-Zebra 3
-Massive X
-Serum 2
-Dune 3

Most fun to use:
-Serum 2
-Pigments
-Phase Plant
-Hive 2

Which I actually use the most:
-Hive 2
-Serum 2
-Omnisphere 3
-Dune 3

Which I really would choose as desert island synths:
-Serum 2 (best for wavetables and extremely versatile)
-Phase Plant (for FM, AM, multiband.stuff and going crazy)
-Omnisphere (good combination of versatility, some analog capabilities and layering stuff)
-not sure between Hive, Zebra 3 or Pigments

Samplers are excluded, so need extra Kontakt, Falcon or HALion.

Just out of interest what type of music do you make? I find Dune and Serum to be more suited to trance or more aggressive EDM. Agree on zebra and massive x, both fantastic

Not linked to a specific genre, but indeed more on the agressive EDM side. Next goals are to do more in direction of Bass Music/Dubstep/Complextro.

Didn't use Dune for a long time, because I don't like the GUI. But rediscovered it recently for finding some useful starting point sounds and tweak them. I don't make anything from scratch with it.

Dune and Serum are kind of opposite animals according to my classification:

While Dune can sound lush and fat and can bring some mojo easily, Serum is rather clean, sharp, can sound brutal and has this modern EDM flavour.

But we have so many good sounding synths these days. Repro, Omnisphere 3, Multi/Poly and some more could also have made it on my list.

Tone2 Icarus
Reveal Sound Spire
U-he Diva
Audio Realism Bass Line

If I had to pick four based on balance, fun, and personal preference, they’d be something like the ones above.
Speedrum 2 is a hidden gem. 8)

PhasePlant - for all it's possibilities and racks. Franks Magic Piano preset is amazing to me.
Dune 3 - For the dark vibe, built in features and Genetics from different patches.
Synplant 2 - Ability to recreate any sound when i cant do manually, plus AI done right
Zebra 3 - Probably be legit for decades to come and can really learn it.

Serum 2 almost made the list but think Phaseplant maybe cover that, tough call!

Vital
Hive
Diva
FB3300

Tough to leave out Zebra among others. Can we make it five or seven :)

I don't think it should be too easy, otherwise you wouldn't have to think too hard about it.
NOVAkILL : Legion GO, AMD Z1x, 16GB RAM, Win11 | Audient EVO 8 | Lumi Keys | Studio Pro 8
Korg Odyssey, bx-oberhausen, Proxima, PolyMax, GR8, JP6K, Union, Atomika,
Invader 2, Flow Motion, Olga, TRK 01, Thorn, Spire, VG Iron

I only play presets and I only use these three.
In the order I use them.

Korg Collection. Almost always M1 or Triton Extreme.
Omnisphere 2 with Trilian and Keyscape in it.
Analog Lab Pro.

I'm most happy with Korg and could do what I want and need with just that one.
