If I want only to do standard downward compression I set the "Down" slider for more than 100% (ratio) and use the grey handlebar for setting the threshold. Right?

On which sounds do you use upward compression?
It's basically just to squash the shit out of a sound, but instead of only squashing the top peaks like a compressor, it also pushes the lower parts of the signal separately.

In theory you can squash the tops less, and get a better overall sound. In reality it's just used to squash the shit out of things even more.

Think anything hyped EDM.
I actually find it not particularly useful as it seems to drop output gain pretty obviously. But that said, I'm not a big fan of OTT in general. I do like Fuse Compressor from Minimal Audio but that can be used as a standard multiband compressor and not just OTT.

I think that the x y z section would need u v and w additional slots. 3 is a bit limiting.
Or let me use mx as an fx.

I just picked up Massive X in the Sweetwater /N.I. freebie, (thanks to everyone involved for their generosity).

I had tried the demo many times in the past when MX went on sale and it just never spoke to me. Perhaps it's because I just have so many other synths in my collection.

I spent some time with MX today and I think it will find a place in my starting line up eventually. I don't do EDM or use Wobbles or similar sounds very frequently but I think I can get the kind of sounds I like out of it in due time.

What is this sweetwater NI freebie deal?

Exactly, bass music and dubstep mid bass and lead sounds almost all use OTTs. It's what makes them scream.

I'll do my best to ignore the clusterfck of a UI and don't get too annoyed by the browser that finally supports arrow keys now, but still wants you to hit enter to load presets... because we don't want to make it too easy, right?

More often than not I'll find a sound I Iike but still end up loading another synth because some quirky design choice keeps me from adjusting the sound to fit in the song. Maybe that's user error sometimes but the UI doesn't help in that regard.
A few days ago I've found a cool sound but after wasting my time with reading the manual and googling I finally had to ditch it because apparently there is no way to set LFO phase in this *checks notes* next generation synthesizer.
It's one of the most amazing sounding synths, but the utterly trash UI just squeezes all the joy out of using it. Works fine for the preset-reliant user, horrible for the sound designer.

Still, probably the best synth ever offered for free. I can only think there must be a paid V2 coming to give it away, as it was NIs flagship synth….
X32 Desk, i9 PC, S88MK3, S1, BWS, Live + PUSH 3, Osmose, RedShift 6 Pro3, Tempera, Syntakt, Digitone II, OP1-F, OPXY, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!

I am 99.99999999% sure there is no Massive X2 coming, probably ever. In fact, presumably no more independent synths at all - that are not built into Kontakt. It’s only expansions and Kontakt instruments from now on, I think

Hmmm, I guess that the other reason they may be giving it away...

Maybe because not many people buy it anyway and so now they create some hype and then people can spend their hard earned bred on Massive X expansions. But thinking about the slow peace of Massive X upgrades and fixes, the fact that they have just updated it with an unwanted OTT compressor, I highly doubt that there is a completely new reiteration is being developed in the background. Also MX was developed in Reaktor as far as I know which NI has now abandoned. Regardless, Massive X is the best sounding fekken soft synths ever created

Based on what NI plans to do with synths this year as per updates on their community, I would not be surprised if NI releases Massive X V2.

Every time I read something like this I die a little bit inside. *Sigh* indeed.

I’m still optimistic, though. This insane free giveaway seems to indicate MX2 is coming, at least that’s how I read it. We‘ll see soon enough.

But like many of us, I guess, I’ve largely moved on from NI. In the last couple of months I’ve bought Phase Plant, Serum and Current. I’m good in the synth department.

If NI manages to surprise us by releasing a competitive synth, I’ll almost certainly jump on it, if only to send them a signal that there’s still a market for this kind of stuff. If not, I’ll just shrug and get some popcorn.

Oh well, it’s never felt so good to be proven wrong. I can’t wait, then
