Don't you have to create a preset with the mapping saved and then load it every time you want to use your controller?Funkybot's Evil Twin wrote: Wed Jul 19, 2023 1:58 am The TAL maps very well to the System-8. Just a quick MIDI Learn operation and you're good to go.

No, I had no idea. I just knew I wanted that one.

Well fortunately it is the $80 one not the $30,000 one.
Based on CoolColJ clips and decades old memories, I may like the Tal J-8 more than the hardware itself..
(please note I didn't say it is better or more accurate (clearly it can't be more accurate than the original
), I just say I prefer it.

I’m kicking myself for selling my buddy’s Jupiter-8 for *only* $12,000.

I haven’t used Nebula but I’ve got good results using Tone Projects Kelvin after (using your calibration settings - thanks!).

Not so much for obvious saturation, but for the hardware harmonics, which are sampled.
Adds a bit of the JP-8 glow, and removes the glassiness
Some old comparisons I made many years ago

I'm working another comparo, which is quite a bit more challenging sound to recreate .... and match on the emulations..

Tried to reproduce this JP8 sound/arp on the Emulations and just haven't come close.
It's a Dual mode sound so only TAL J-8 can do it anyway, but even the single mono version of it has proven tough to program on them.

LOL! Tell me about it. It was about a year before prices blew up. We didn't see it coming.zvenx wrote: Wed Jul 19, 2023 4:45 pm Your buddy probably wants to kick you more.

Have you tried the same patch on another hw Jupiter 8? Maybe Patrick could do it and then we could hear the difference if any between two hardware synths.

I made the sound along time ago, and I can't rember the exact settings I used, hard to recall patches on the Jp8perpetual3 wrote: Thu Jul 20, 2023 11:34 am Have you tried the same patch on another hw Jupiter 8? Access to another JP8 is not exactly easy

That’s why I was thinking, given your close relationship with TAL, that you could compare with each other.

CoolColJ, I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts on this and would love to hear more comparisons. I'd just advise against trying to recreate any patches on the software unless you're first sure of what's happening with all relevant settings on the hardware patch you're comparing to [both layers if applicable]. I'd also suggest trying to make them sound alike as best you can, which is what I think you did. But avoid just matching knob/fader positions as they won't match.
If you want to get nerdy, you can temporarily boost the resonance with a scope on and using that to tune filter frequencies, check the envelope shapes, etc. It's boring stuff, but these things don't translate from hardware to software and even unit to unit so it in part becomes about how well you can reprogram what you hear on one synth on another to account for things like tolerances.
When it comes to me, I only care about: can I make them sound the same to the point where it's not important? When I was comparing my Prophet Rev4 to Repro-5, I was happy enough with how RePro-5 performed in that test even though there were differences. And RePro isn't a Rev 4 emulation anyway.

As always (well except when it comes to vst3
, I kid, I kid)...
Words of wisdom.
And you said much better what I was trying to allude to:
