Yes , it's a little annoying having to track which adjustments are global and which are per project . You can save templates , though . You can save a preset with your Zoom preferences , for instance , that will affect all your projects . As a trick , search for "global" in the Operation Manual PDF .

Yeah, I'm still working through the manual. Yes, the "RTFM" phrase applies here, but I couldn't help myself but jump in and learn on the fly! So I'll definitely have to remember which things are global and which are not.

Yes , it's better fooling around making trial proyects before studying the manual . You need to know the projet window , the mixers and the main menus by heart if you want to understand what the manual are trying to show you .

My .02...

Comps: Usable for most things. Not my first choice for vocals.
EQ: Very good... I don't use anything else.
Delays. Good and (across the versions) diverse. The original double delay from way back is still my favorite for lots of things. You can download it I think.
Chorus/Mods: Pretty good and also diverse (flangers/mods/etc/etc)
AmpSim: Pretty good to my ears as those things go. I've heard better.
Reverbs: Excellent. REVerence 10 & Roomworks 8.5

There's also a lot of utility FX in there like a midi monitor, tuner, test tone generator (which should be mandatory in any pro daw), scope and other stuff.

The only 3rd party FX I use regularly are RComp, RDesser, L2, S1 which are all better than the Steiny plugs that do the same. The Steiny comps and limiters "bite" a bit too much for my taste so I avoid them on vocals. On other things like guitars that bite can often be just the right thing though.

This is one reason why I created my project just for messing around. I can frequently just clear out the audio folder if I need without worrying about deleting something I need.

Ok, time to play some more in a bit!

By the way, people keep talking about things you can download, like old plugins, the S90 piano(possibly), etc. Where is this download area?

Interested to know that too, but as for the Yamaha S90EA piano, this is included on the CD installation disks. I'm guessing from your posts that it must be on that second disc which you need to install pronto.

(I've not got around to discs 3-4 either, they are the HSO demo...)

Well, it was part of the 4.5 update, it's like a GB in size. What I don't know is what it wouldn't be included in C5

I guess you could go to the download area, enter in C4, but I'm not sure it would load correctly........it's halion player material.

Thanks. I just found where to download some things. Just go to ftp://ftp.steinberg.net in your browser and click on the version you have, or additional content, or whatever. I haven't explored it yet, but you can get updates and such here as well.

But my BIGGEST surprise, is that they have VSL Expression maps on the ftp! Lots of them! I'm SOOOOOOO pumped about this because I hopefully won't have to map it all myself! YAY!

You can find legacy plugins and such as well on there. So go look around.

I do need to install that second disk. I was holding off because I might be going back to a disk image tonight or tomorrow since I have been having ASIO4ALL problems and can't figure them out. So we'll see. I'm looking forward to seeing what is on the disk though.

Some of that stuff is on the public Steinberg FTP. Magneto, Vocoder, Double Delay some other useful stuff. Double Delay is my default bg_vox group delay.

ftp://ftp.steinberg.net/Download/Legacy ... lugins/PC/

If you look on the CD though there should be a folder on the main Cubase install CD named "Additional Content" or something like that with all of those plugins in there. They don't get installed, you have to copy them.

Oh you found it already. :D

Yeah, I'm doing a lot of looking around. There are a lot of cool things on the ftp, but I'm still pretty excited about the VSL Expression maps.

Don't forget (later) to have a look at the media libraries. These are project independent media libraries that you can call at any time, audition sounds from, and drag and drop audio to the timeline and elsewhere.

Perfect for special FX, loops, one-shot drum samples and those types of things if you'd rather not be bothered with the media bay for those things. Here is one of my media libraries, it's all one-shot kicks, 136 in this library.

To audition you just click the waveform and it sounds immediately. Contrary to what people say who aren't familiar with the entire application, you don't have to use MediaBay for samples. The old way is still there. Libraries are a great way to organize your digital media if you just don't click with the media bay.

And like Media Bay, the files don't have to be in the same physical directory they can be scattered all over your hard drives. These are just pointers.

Thanks. Yet another thing to explore. Ya know, as I run through C5, I'm just amazed at the level of refinement it has. Sure there are some clunky parts. But it's like they actually took the time to make it usable. Just using the new plugins alone, they are great. I can see myself using almost every one of them.

Steinberg gets a lot of crap, but it's hard to deny that their product is a good one. It may not get the updates that some smaller apps do, but I'll take the refined approach any day. That's also what I like about Podium. It gets pretty frequent updates, but it does it right from the start.

Anyways, enough bragging on Steinberg. I got work to do!

Ok, another discovery of a well implented feature. I LOVE the fact that you can place tracks in a folder, close the folder, and without opening the folder, you can see what is inside and access the entire settings of each track, including sends, inserts, quick controls, EQ, and everything else. ALL WITHOUT OPENING THE FOLDER!!! How excellent is that? I've never seen that ability before in a host. Maybe it exists, but that's brilliant!
