Going to rework osc to make them xmod and hard synth capable.

I have been watching this project for a while and now it's quite good actually. Sounds very good. Stereo separation/pan for unison would be great addition. I don't mind if it is GUIless, you can do GUI in the very end when the product is finished.

I really like the sound of it but I noticed something weird. At least to my ears. It's probably intentional and logical?

Anyway: when you play legato with any sound the attack of the sound sounds weird and much stronger than when you play the same sound with short pauses between the notes [not legato, I mean :)]. The stronger and weird sounding attack is two notes overlapping and therefore sounding stronger. I guess that's how polyphonic synths sound when played fast, but there should be a way to avoid that? What do you all think?

Waiting for the monophonic mode. :D

Its natural.Actually 2 voices are 2x louder and when you play legato there is a moment when 2 voices played simultaneously. Maybe set attack and release a tiny bit higher

Post

Yeah, I thought so. Why did I find it sounding weird since it's so logical. I'm usually as logical as a Vulcan. :D Probably because I'm a monophonic and legato synth addict. :) Thing I play polyphonicaly are strings, pads, organs, pianos [all that I don't use much] and I like my VAs monophonic for some perverted reason [sounds better in the mix, shhh :)].

Interesting, it uses 8% of one core constantly here, so that means one voice would use 1%. That's the other reason why I like monophonic sounds. :D 8% is not much, so it's already kinda optimised DSP? I think that's pretty good for a nicely sounding VA like this. 8)

Keep up the great work, 2DaT! :D I can smell you're cooking something really good here, maybe even great? You're doing this quite meticulously, I think. I'm a very meticulous person myself. :hihi:

:hihi:
Of course this plugin is not usable in current condition. It cant save patches , it doesnt have gui. But compared with previous version i defeat cpu demand, improved sounds a bit. So i included savihost to let you hear how it will sound.
cool will try that this weekend. Been exploring the world of free FX more than synths lately but I will get to it.

I've been looking at the specs of OB-X and OB-8. Wouldn't it be better to do an OB-8 emu, minus the sequencer? It's already 8 polyphonic [OB-X was 4,6 or 8 polyphonic]. ;) OB-8 has better LFO, for instance, but the differences aren't that big. It's just a little more perfect OB-X. :D

OB-X http://www.vintagesynth.com/oberheim/obx.php

Beautiful machines... :P Great, logical layout for editing sounds [note to GUI makers :hihi:]. Bring memories...

Ob-x has a different filter and different oscillators, as result they sound different. Of course ,i can implement some ob-8 features, like extended lfo, env-mod,triangle oscillators - they are pretty easy. As for the sound things became more harder: ob-x with its large discrete circuits sounds a bit bassy and bit noisy compared to cem chips based ob-8. Also ob-8 is more precise and has less differences between voices. I wonder if my plugin ever come close to one of those synths. They are true analog monsters

Post

You read my mind. :D Since I was thinking why not taking the best stuff from both, like extended LFO, env-mod, triangle OSC from OB-8? :hihi: Thankfully this is software you're making and everything is possible a little more easily. You can even add something that you just always wanted to have on an OB-X or OB-8! :hihi: Like a sub OSC? I know, that's a bit harder to implement. It just the first thing that sprang to my mind.

Yeah, true analog monsters... and Matrix-12... :hihi: I simply adore Oberheim synths. To me they sound a bit edgier than say Arp, Roland or Korg, but softer than Moog ones. That is precisely what I like about them. I never really liked Moog ones, at least not that much. [yeah, flame me ] Great stuff...

Thanks for this! I like it, especially now the CPU is within more reasonable limits. My one request is a little lower cutoff for the filter at its lowest, right now it doesn't really close all the way.

Post

I've noticed some weird things with the filter myself. He's just experimenting at this phase, so it's understandable. ;) This should be considered an "alpha" at this point. Don't complain if your projects don't sound the same with the newer version of it. Use the version you worked with when you made it.

I hope I spared you from replying 2DaT. So you can spend more time coding and less replying. Thank you so much for your time, mate. This really does sound very promising.

Cheers!

Xmod and hardsync ready now, sounds cool. However i remade oscillators section and now they sound a bit different(i can make them 1:1 to state they were before with hs and xmod but thats not the point). Also i tweaked ob-x osc design to make osc 1 modulate osc 2. Its capable of creating cool analog stuff with xmod and hardsync both :) . Will publish after testing. Here quick draft of capable sounds:

:D I just smiled that broadly. X-mod is one of those features that separates Oberheim synths from the rest of the oldschool, and the one I find really cool. Can't wait to tinker with it. :tu:

Warning! Loud! :D
Osc1 and osc 2 pitches are quantized by 1 semitone.

It's just awesome! :D X-mod and hardsync add so much to the sound capabilities. I've been playing with it for like two hours... try to process it through Klanghelm IVGI with a bit of drive [3-5] and hf response at 7. Bliss. I tried making some classic pads this time and boy it sounds nice. Then I tried unison bass... it's so thick that you need nothing but Obxd, a kick, snare, and hihat to make a track. hmmm like early Nitzer Ebb? :hihi:

Brilliant idea about adding the pan pots per voice. :P That is an "internal feature" on the real one. :hihi:

I noticed that CPU consumption is a little bit lower, too. Way to go! ;)

Thank you so much! Keep up this great and exciting work!

I agree. And it has been a real pleasure to watch and listen as you have developed this. I am wishing you and your instrument the best!
