Then he complains that noone cares about it ...
ha. Kid A would never have existed if Thom followed that approach.
You could say the same of Pink Floyd, Brian Eno, The Beatles ... and every otber original artist. tbh KidA is an example of an indie band trying to be popular with the dance scene (Or was that your point?)

No not at all.
Thom was burnt out after Ok Computer so he said "screw it I'm doing something I wanna do. To hell with what the people think".
Admittedly this is much easier to do after selling millions of copies of a previous album :hihi:
"I was wondering if you'd like to try Magic Mushrooms"
"Oooh I dont know. Sounds a bit scary"
"It's not scary. You just lose a sense of who you are and all that sh!t"

Or another example: Calvin Harris...

First he made some kind of strange drum&bass music (in the late 90ies), then he made funny dance songs and his album "I Created Disco" which I still love (because of all these lo-fi sounds)...

He didn't say: "Oh, I have to make mainstream trance music like Avicii to get famous!"

He did what he wanted to do. That's why he got attention (and of course, he had much luck).

Yeah but he had to anyways change his music to get popular. And sometimes his music sound even too much Calvin Harris. Have to admit I like his music but also Im fearing his music get sound more and more same. Also it's more and more usual big room house like song Calvin Harris & Alesso - Under Control ft. Hurts

If you know how to WRITE music, not just doodle in a few notes in a single MIDI bar, then do it. Write YOUR music, not theirs. You're better than that.

As it has been said a few times in this thread; do music for the love of music, not for the love of people.

It seems that so many people come here not to ask for advice about how to write their music, but more for advice on how to conform with what they perceive as the 'requirements' of a certain genre.

Be a genre buster - do something new and exciting. I personally find it hard to see what satisfaction I would get out of producing a nth generation copy of another artist's material.

I never really understood why so many people are asking these "How can I sound like X?" questions.
Isn't it really boring to try to sound like someone else all the time?

I always make the music I want to make, it's cool if someone else likes it, but I wouldn't change a thing about it just because someone on the intertubez says I should.

Cheers

Well I can answer that, but again, my pretentious minset might make me a bit biased.

The pop "Vengeance" sound is the the popular sound because unfortunately I feel like a lot of people have shallow taste in their music. On occasions, these people with shallow taste in their music decide they want to make shallow tasteless music, and they know Deadmau5, and Martin Garrix are the epitome of shallow, tasteless music so they ask how to sound like them so they too can make more shallow tasteless music.

On the other hand, there are those who want to go the Easy Money route. Look, I hate the show, but this I feel is appropriate:

I feel like there is a number of people who feel creating the shallow, tasteless music is a route to stardom. Of course they are about as delusional as a person who wants to make 100% honest music without the taint of "evils" in it and expect people to donate to their "just cuase". I believe it was Tricky-Loops who said...or someone in this thread who said that even Deadmau5, Skrillex, Martin Garrix did SOMETHING right to bring his incredibly similar, uncreative, shallow, tasteless garbage into the limelight - meaning he probably had something creative at one point.
Point is; these Easy Money delusional people think it's as simple as write Avicimau5lex music and they'll be stars.

+ 1,000,000,000,000

If someone would say to me: "Your songs sound like Avicii...", I would delete all of them instantly.

But they sound so different that nobody will say it, anyway...

This!

My impression is that MANY people are loosing their creativity as soon as they're famous. Another example is Stefan Raab (sorry, you might not know him because he's a German producer) who made strange, funny songs when he was less famous...

-- but as soon as he was famous, he produced boring mainstream pop music for Lena and other boring pop music... :x

A positive example (from Germany, too) would be Rammstein - they always made the music they like. They didn't care about sounding like other artists...

Whoever wants music instead of noise, joy instead of pleasure, soul instead of gold, creative work instead of business, passion instead of foolery, finds no home in this trivial world of ours.

You also have to understand that often times major labels (or sadly even smaller labels) will push artists to do music the way they want it.
It's for this reason I have turned labels down - big, small, independent, or whatever. I've always done all my work myself and I will probably remain that way (aside from collaborations - but those are temporary alliances)

I've read this so many times but I still don't believe that labels are dictating the music style COMPLETELY. Otherwise Calvin Harris would sound like Avicii...

I rather think the artists themselves are the ones who are trying desperately to keep their success and aren't open for new ideas. Of course they're under pressure (from the record company) to make songs that people want to buy. But that doesn't necessarily mean that they have to sound like all other artists...

Post

Well I can agree with that point too, actually.
No, you are probably right, they aren't dictating every aspect of their music.

It's hard for me to say, considering I'm not signed to a major label  It's just speculations from rumors that drift from major labels, is all.

As far as I know, for the major labels you have to provide different mixes (album mix, club mix, radio mix, vocal mix etc.) but for the ORIGINAL song there aren't many rules...

Sure is.

So .... which major label did you turn down?

As far as you know? Do you mean you're just making this stuff up? ;)
