Monark is seriously impressive.

The instructions are given during the video:
VCF Res 7
VCF Cutoff - 3-1
ENV A:200 D:600 S:2
VCO1: tri, audio: off
VCO3 to VCF cutoff modulation
fine tuning envelope
I have tried it with Monark and the Legend. Both can be near. I think the Legend was nearer little bit. But I couldn't produce the same exactly (of course in the Legend use the 12lp filter). What I mean I could make some humanoid voice, but not exactly the same clarity as in the video.
I'm going to try RePro~1 and see.
Edit:
Yes, RePro~1 is the same. Can do such humanoid sounds easily but not exactly like the video. I couldn't make it identical.
Nice experience. I might try with the Korg Minilogue when I go to the shops. Can it sound like in the video?

RePro will be completely different since the modulation ranges are MUCH wider than on a Mini.
And this is something I think is happening here as well - different Minis were calibrated differently, different component tolerances, they don't necessarily sound the same at same settings at all.

Just did a first try with The Legend.chk071 wrote:Always wanted to ask this, but, i have a hard time getting a vowel like sound from the filter FM, as has been shown in this video:

Did not invest really much time yet but here is the patch file for my first approach:

The filter FM by Osc 3 indeed seems to be the main part there but also the Cutoff and Resonance amount are important. Tweaking the Semitones/pitch in Osc 3 makes a big difference in the resulting sound.

Yes, it has a different character for sure, but you can really achieve some similar results. Try the sync also, it can give some very nice results.EvilDragon wrote:RePro will be completely different since the modulation ranges are MUCH wider than on a Mini.

Just fiddled a bit with Monark, and found a setting which is pretty close to the sound in the video:

It still sounds cleaner in the video, but, i have a feeling that that is also down to the resonance behavior, and Monark sounds more driven, and dirtier than the Minimoog in the video. Anyway, not too bad for now.
I think the mistake i always made was to set the frequency of the modulating oscillator 3 too low, it really has to be cranked all the way up.

First approach of a similar patch in Monark:Ingonator wrote:Just did a first try with The Legend.chk071 wrote:Always wanted to ask this, but, i have a hard time getting a vowel like sound from the filter FM, as has been shown in this video:

Does not soud 100% identical yet but close. Anyway the Filter FM in Monark produces an additional "ringing" noise which i do not find in The Legend which sound more "clean" with the Filter FM (and FWIW i also did not notice this in the video). I checked with the higest quality/oversampling in Monark and this is still there.
If it comes to proper Minimoog emulation i would trust The Legend more than any other emulation, same is true for the Filter FM.
Except for comparison purposes like here i only use The Legend for Minimoog patches at the moment (got Monark as part of Komplete 10 now, in the past i also bought it as a single product).

Some Minimoogs do that. It's bleeding some VCO signal through into the VCA.Chris-S wrote:While noodling in Monark I discovered that Monarks outputs a (low vol) tone even when all 5 mixer switches are turned off.
Bug, or analog behaviour?

Seems to be the "Leakage" parameter/knob at page B of Monark which normally i set to 0 when i use Monark.Chris-S wrote:While noodling in Monark I discovered that Monarks outputs a (low vol) tone even when all 5 mixer switches are turned off.

Ah, thanks, so it's analog behaviour.
[del]Concerning the vowel exercise IMHO the Legend sounds a bit better than Monark. [/del]

With autoplay enabled on YT, the video following the vocal one posted below shows how to make the bass on Thriller (sounds very authentic
). And I noticed that the cutoff frequency goes from -5 to +5 on the Moog. What do negative values mean?

Probably just a mislabeling. Even envelope times don't necessarily need to be like what was labeled on them. Usually cutoff frequency is set with a voltage that goes from 0 to 5 or 10 V...

As usual from Mr "what's a slop knob?" Retrosound, it's got FX on. He's also doing some of the "talking" by moving the control, which is going to be easier on a Minimoog than using a mouse
Anyway, here's a quick attempt in Monark.. Attached bigger screenshot
One "trick" is to turn the oscillator detune up to "full" (on page B). You'll hear, thanks to the modulation, this can add some grit to the sound (dependent on where you set the modulation tuning)

I often tryed the vowel FX like in the video.
I personally got the most similar result with the P900 modular (which has also filter modeled after a Minimoog).
Of course i have to move the cutoff knob while playing notes to get a smooth "yeah" ,"ai" or more pronounced vowels.
Interesting was when i tryed it for fun with the Moog Model 15 app. It sounded totally different but more "human" and less robotic. Maybe because the filter there loses all the low end if you crank up the resonance which makes the vowels sounds higher. But it's hard to get a deep monk singer like sound.
I also experienced that even the slightest change in settings can make it good or worse.
At the end, all these synths can do it.
Together they can create a choir with different voices
