Wow... Scary stuffdeastman wrote:I like Izotope too, and own their products. But these baseless patent applications are directly related to the sale of software products created by BT's development partner, Izotope. If you want to make any kind of impact on BT, tout have to do that through Izotope. Make your displeasure known, and hopefully they'll respond.
Some companies apply for patents just to stop others from doing it first, with no intention of limiting their use. Sadly, I don't get that warm fuzzy feeling here. And yes, these patents, if granted, could have a serious chilling effect on the industry. At best, every other developer of granular synthesis could be required to pay BT a licensing fee.
Again, this isn't about disliking izotope, but there really is no other way to put a stop to this nonsense.

Yepdeastman wrote:The reason this is cause for concern, rather than just an absurd joke, is that the US patent system is fundamentally broken. Spurious patents are awarded all the time, with no input from the public, and no real means of recourse. Once awarded, they can sue anyone they want, and likely win. More likely, they have only to threaten to sue, and demand license fees of anyone making products involving granular synthesis, sample slicing, variable rate modulation of parameters, particularly with a curve function, or live launching of audio clips. It's scary stuff, and it actually happens all the time. This isn't just some hypothetical joke. Just look at the insanity between Apple and Samsung. Or, hey, what if BT ever assigns these patents to a patent troll firm who care nothing for the audio market?

I think it's been said in several places that they've discontinued work on Breaktweaker (this is the curse of the revived old thread making it look like there's news). I'm a huge fan of iZotope FX-wise, but this experience has put me off buying any VIs from them - really not very clever to introduce a new product only half finished, then abandon it.memyselfandus wrote:I'm hoping they add midi drag n drop.. Are you serious? That sucks! I saw a thread somewhere saying that but thought it was a joke!noiseboyuk wrote:I think it's been said in several places that they've discontinued work on Breaktweaker (this is the curse of the revived old thread making it look like there's news). And the same counts for Iris 2, a half-baken instrument which was left behind with some serious bugs and hasn't been updated in 15 months.noiseboyuk wrote:I think it's been said in several places that they've discontinued work on Breaktweaker (this is the curse of the revived old thread making it look like there's news). Got this for 80-something bucks during JRRshop's December sales and it has been worthwhile, even if from a purely experimental/fun kind of way, rather than practical/useful.
I'd like to see iZotope include a 'Lite' cut down module version that is much more CPU-friendly.
Sometimes, rather than developing a whole beat sequence, I like to just run just a single pad or percussion (hihat or snare) through BreakTweaker to add sonic interest. At the moment this is prohibitive without freezing tracks constantly.
