Entry to OSC 83 "Voices From Beyond"
https://soundcloud.com/ken-suguro/kensu ... rom-beyond
Started off aiming to see if I could get a usable strings section. I got the strings to sound okay (so-so legato + good fast attack with mod wheel), but decided to do a vowel filter + random vowel modulation to see if a chorus could be made. Ended up sounding pretty nice. Another unexpected star of the show was a "gong" patch that I'm using throughout. It's somewhere between a gong, a mallet cymbal, and a thunder sheet. (crescendos very well) Lastly, there's the "brass for dummies" patch that sounds mainly like a trombone section. Does the low growl fine with some high end ripping. Is it absolutely real? Not really, but able to serve the same functionality me thinks. I tried to play it like french horns in the lyrical passage and had a tough time. At best "dark" trombones sounding.
I'm not sure what I was doing with the 16 beat soul-esque section at the end. There was a pretty cool sounding bass patch so decided to take out for a ride. Rhodes patch was based on a factory preset but edited to give more tine and less reed. Sounds okay here since I'm not really pushing it.
18 instances of MPowerSynth (in trial mode)
Tracked in Reaper 5.11/x64

Sorry wagtunes, I am on OSX & didn't realise it wasn't cross-platform, so I guess you are S.O.L. Its another rare "Alchemy Moment" but there's many Windows-only VSTs so you're likely to find some similar. Over & out....z.prime wrote:You're on Windows, right? I don't have a version for Windows...

Dunno what's funniest, wag getting rickrolled in the first place, or him carrying on the pretence he doesn't know he was rickrolled for two pages, even though the wiki explains it quite succinctly.
Can you send it to me?

Rickroll. Is that like a sausage roll?OutCider wrote:Dunno what's funniest, wag getting rickrolled in the first place, or him carrying on the pretence he doesn't know he was rickrolled for two pages, even though the wiki explains it quite succinctly.

Thanks! I'd be happy to go over the legato. The way this behaves is modeled after how the Synful Orchestra strings behaves. (maybe others do the same, but I just know Synful very well) Synful uses a "time gap" detection to pick whether a particular note was a detache or legato, so fundamentally, it operates in a different way. But the trick is in separating note intensity from attack time.
Velocity controls attack time, so attack time on the attack env and filter env decreases the stronger the velocity. (higher velocity = faster attack) Lower velocity softens the attack so the legato lines connect better.
The note intensity is controlled by mod wheel. This controls overall filter pos and also a bit of the OSC shape so that higher mod wheel position has a more intense sound.
The problem I had was that for MPowerSynth, I couldn't figure out how to completely decouple the volume from velocity. It's probably a setting somewhere, but I couldn't find it.
By decoupling attack time from the overall intensity, it makes it very easy to play a phrase using the velocity to make sure it all sounds connected and legato, and then go back and fiddle with the mod wheel so the dynamics is right. (with practice, that's done in one shot)
I separated instances to bass+cello, viola, violin so they could be controlled independently. Patch was adjusted slightly so it sounded correct in each instrument's range. I feel the violas ended up being a little too dark.
The patch I made for OSC 83 was particularly good at faster attacks which I heavily featured in the forcefully transitioned disco section. Legato was a semi success. It still feels like each note is fading in in some parts. The convo reverb along with expressive playing helps smooth things out though.

great explanation, your osc is an additive osc or a "classic" waveform?
when you say:"decouple the volume from velocity", it mean disconnect the volume to the velocity?
if it's that, you can try to go in the velocity shape (the second tab after the glide setting, and make a flat curve) i have do that for a poly brass patch: the velocity control the amp attack and filter but not the volume and it work well

btw, is it generally ok to talk about the contest synth in this thread? In creating the patches for the contest, I got the feeling that it was difficult to set up MIDI input as a modulator.. it's possible, but was a bit confusing since all "MIDI" stuff is in its own popup. So was wondering what people's thoughts were.
