I forget which version I tried, 2 or 3 or something, but it sounded like a decent rompler piano preset and I liked it. Now it sounds like an awful, phasey mess. It has a slight "nails on a chalkboard" effect where it makes my skin crawl a little.

It's kind of close to sounding real, but the way that it's off is awful an unmusical.
Pianoteq is wonderful. My go to when I want anything related to acoustic pianos (and a lot more). It's much better now than when it was at version 2/3. Back then it wasn't at all realistic.

I'm used to the sound of real acoustic pianos, and I don't know what you're talking about when you say "phasey mess".

I'm also used to the sound of real acoustic pianos. It kinda sounds like there's weird phase cancellation going on or something. I'm not sure exactly what it is, nor do I care to try to spend any time analyzing it. It just sounds bad. It sounds like something that happens on real pianos, but inaccurate. Like they've modeled a specific aspect of real pianos, but the modeling lacks the complexity of real life and sounds very wrong to my ears, like it's in the uncanny valley.

I never said 2/3 was realistic. I'll repeat, it sounded like a rompler preset, which is better than the current version, which sounds closer to real, but bad.

Obviously we wouldn't release that as NOVAkILL, would we? That siad, if we did, and it was good, I reckon they'd release it. It's not like all the other acts on the label sound like us. Birthday Massacre, for example, have zero in common with what we do.

Absolutely, that's why I have 100 of them, not one. But none of them are so specialised that they are only useful for a specific style of music. But I think a big part of it is that a lot of people seem to only know one way of doing something, presumably the way they saw it done in a YT video. I'm fairly sure that's where the "I need A, B, C and D to make X" mindset comes from.
Your preferred choice is simpler synths that have good sonic presence. Isn't that why you use certain synths, and not others?
Not really, it's more about keeping it simple so that I don't get bogged down. It helps maintain the flow of what I'm doing. It's the same reason I have pretty much stopped using effects in my mixes, too. The more I simplify the process, the better everything starts to sound. Honestly, I thought I was probably just kidding myself about it but my bandmate agrees that everything we've been doing lately, under this new regime, sounds better in pretty much every way. Songs are clearer, punchier and both new and old songs sound better when I rework them in this new paradigm. So my choice of synths is part of that broader plan.
Also, clearly, complexity usually doesn't mean better sound imo.
Exactly! Moreover, it's no guarantee of good sound, either. That's why I gravitate towards a lot of emulations - that's where you get the detailed sound quality without the complication of a million features you'll never use.
