I actually don't hear any bit/sample rate reduction on Upstairs at Eric's on synth lines and artifacts are very noticeable on other CMI II productions I've heard. That was my initial concern.

According to the doc they were recording directly into desk and saturation in general would only increase artifacts.
But I think it's time to stop. There are no actual proof of your words yet but it doesn't mean you're right or wrong.

If the Fairlight was used to play each line with samples, envelope times would vary and the filter would always sound like 100% key tracking.

I don't think that's the case.

So i just downloaded the demo... OK most sounds are great, however - the KICK drums... as with most softsynths.... they don't even come close. They sound weak. I think softsynths fail in the lower end frequencies.

The two yazoo kicks sound nothing close and infact they barely sound passable at all :(

Can you make those some kicks on a hardware Pro-One and post the side by side so we can compare? I'd love to hear the difference in an A/B. :tu:

Doing so might even help Urs mike Re-Pro1 better if it's that off in some settings.

dont have one - BUT, go listen to the Loopmasters Pro One dry unprocessed kick......

The "Lonely You" preset that is supposed to be Yaz "Only You", you can tell me it has the fullness of that kick.

Do you have the sheet of parameters for that sound in the pro-one so we can try it in repro-1? :ud:

yes, they were published in a magazine in 1982. someone actually copied them, and THIS is what it is supposed to sound like:

Do you really assume that a YouTube video with audio @ 126kbps gives a sound that can be used as a reference? Or that the sound by this band was not mastered afterwards?

This is not my kind of music at all - we all have our personal preferences - but I do know from personal experience and from discussions on 'my' kind of music that Youtube tends to enhance the sound in the videos that are uploaded to them.

Not meant as a critique on your point of view, only a question.
But I was not impressed by the kick I heard on that clip. I would never expect a kick, or a guitar or any acoustic instrument to be really reproduced by a vst. I take digital sounds for what they are and sound like. No emulation is ever perfect.

The person who made that video said this:

"First I transcribed the music (sequenced with Cubase), using soft-synth sounds as temporary stand-ins for the Pro-One. Then I had to dial in all the Pro-One sounds one-by-one and record each part via a Kenton MIDI-CV interface. I found that all of the patches from the article needed adjusting to get them in the ballpark"

So there is a hardware Pro-One where he needed to adjust the settings of all of the patches to get them in the ballpark.

forget the video, its not that great... however, see the article with Vince Clarke's BD patch. OK, the Yazoo "Lonely You" preset isnt exact, BUT i dialed in the exact settings (or close to) and its wimpy.

I know its not a big beefy kick, but its missing that analog goodness... the richness, you know?

dont get me wrong, the rest of the presets are AMAZING. I am going to purchase this most likely. Going to run the demo for a week and see.

And it never occurred to you that that patch you talk about was processed in mixing stage? Eq, compression, you know? Plus small knob variations etc.. Really? Really you expected to put knobs from some chart and expected 100% same sound?
