Hosting vsti can be funny for triggering synth parameters and it also prevents cumbersome track routing if you are not a Bitwig user
It also outputs midi if you want to trigger a drum rack or such.
Version 2 is already in the pipe...

Looks interesting. Inserted it in my Must-try-Pipeline.Kalamata Kid wrote: Fri Aug 18, 2023 7:55 am Saw the Catalyst by Toneworks review in the September 2023 Compute Music magazine. Got an 8/10 rating.
Btw, someone should tell their web designer that one simply does not use several 1.8mb sized PNG-images for the header slider. SynthPlugin.png is even 3.8mb.

I like
that the Catalyst can host VSTi's.
I wonder how Catalyst compares to:
Audiaire Zenith - https://www.musicradar.com/reviews/audiaire-zenith
Devicemeister Stepic - https://www.musicradar.com/news/stepicv ... cer-plugin
or other similar plugins.

I only tried a demo of Catalyst, and because I have Stepic, I didn't find any functionality that was missing from Stepic EXCEPT the VSTi hosting. I would not want to work that way, personally, but I can see the attraction for some. In fact I've not found any sequencer that comes close to Stepic's feature list. I am not familiar with Audiaire Zenith, Kalamata- That link is not resolving for me. It appears Audiare is owned by Splice and the only purchase option is $6/mo for 13 months; odd that it can't be purchased outright. The trial is a not so generous 3 days. Too bad- it looks nice, anyway.
Too many DAWs and plug-ins

BluesMuse,
Thanks for the info. Stepic had many positive posts here at KVR.
It is on my list to possibly purchase.
Try the Zenith link again.

Looking at Zenith, I guess I would be interested if I wasn't a Bitwig user - I can modulate everything there already and create simple interfaces for synths and stuff if I want or need to.
Catalyst looks rather similar to Stepic, hosting VSTs in a sequencer makes no sense in Bitwig., so the new me will stick with one sequencer, Stepic, for the time being

BTW. Stepic allows you to create Midi presets for the automation lanes, so you can quickly select your synth and see all the parameters you can modulate (those presets can't be shared yet AFAIK) in clear text. Especially worth your while if you use external hardware which often has very cryptic CC assignments.

Seen a lot of positive talk about Stepic, but I already have HY-SEQ32 and it looks like it has just about everything except ratchets which I wouldn’t tend to use outside of percussion sequences anyway. Am I overlooking some other features it has?

Yup. Stepic is pretty good. Glad I bought it. Not my favorite GUI to work with but very powerful.ThomasHelzle wrote: Fri Aug 25, 2023 7:18 pm Looking at Zenith, I guess I would be interested if I wasn't a Bitwig user - I can modulate everything there already and create simple interfaces for synths and stuff if I want or need to.

For melodies, I mostly use Riffer.
For drums and sometimes simple arp melodies, Beat Scholar. Beat Scholar has a unique approach with the "pizzas" that is enjoyable to work with.

Strokes is another interesting sequencer (also has sound generation). It was just updated and new capability to not just switch between patterns but morph between them (morphs parameters, not audio crossfade). Here's the video from the developer showing the new morphing abilities.

Strokes deserves more recognition.
Do you use it for melodies pdxindy?
I’ve only ever used it for drums.

I bought Strokes when it first came out. Since then, he has added so much new functionality, I found it overwhelming to keep up with and so haven't actually used it in a while. I thought the new morphing stuff looks pretty unique but haven't tried it (yet).simmo75 wrote: Sat Aug 26, 2023 5:31 pm Great update!

For melodies, I often play them by hand. But when I use some tool to program them, I mainly use Riffer. Riffer is focused and easy to work with but also capable.
My favorite step sequencer is Logic's Step Sequencer. I like it better than any VST/CLAP plugin sequencer. But I don't use Logic much as I mainly use Bitwig.
