i was going to bed about 3 hours ago, but somehow haven't got there yet...

barnadine - somewhat close but no gaulois, though 'Admiral' Nelson made me chuckle.

herbie flowers did indeed play bass on one of this Admiral's records.

the following statements are false but can be unscrambled to be correct:

A. Sandie Shaw was a session guitarist on the Admiral's first recording.

B. Jimmy Page covered one of the Admiral's earlier hits.

So, who is this French 'Admiral'?
