although none of the above did a particularly wonderful job

Harry Webb, Gary Webb, Gordon Sumner and Bernie Sumner - Bernard Sumner is the odd one out as he changed his name to that rather than from that.

Yep! The others are Cliff Richard, Gary Numan and Sting for those that didn't know...

Bernard was originally known as Bernard Dicken, was Bernard/Barny Albrecht for a while, then settled on Sumner, which was his mother's name. Unlike the others, who all settled on some made-up bollocks...
