Funkybot's Evil Twin wrote:I just made an extremely pretty sounding square pad in Strobe. So not only can it can be done, it's not hard. What I did to get it: I used the LP12 filter and backed the drive off a bit (-13db), then I setup a single square osc, then I set Unison to 2 and used the "hidden oscillator" feature to create a different osc for that second voice, then I set the pitch to that 2nd voice up, added some triangle on it, and set the envelopes and master level. I then used the P1/P2 controls to add some S+H movement to the filter for when I need it and it sounds amazing.

If you can't get clean pretty VA style pads out of Strobe, it's not Strobe's fault. Next time you're at your friend's house, check out some of Ingonator's Shine On brass pad sounds, those are great and also fit your description of what Strobe can't do.

Seriously, even if you know how to program synths, these particular synths are very idiosyncratic and unique and you need to learn about them.
This was exactly the point in my last post. You have to know how to program Strobe (and Cypher) and you could get almost every sound, either smooth or harsh.

Ingonator wrote: With the "Stack" function in the OSC section of Strobe you could layer 5 OSCs and detune them which could lead to a supersaw sound. Additional you can mix two waveforms in the main OSC and 4 waveforms in the Sub-OSCs. You could do PWM for the main OSC and the Sub-Osc separately. The modulation system is very nice and powerful too, you just have to understand it. That's complex enough for me. If that's not enough you could still use Cypher and/or Amber. The last thing is to add more modulation, a step sequencer, or layer 3 patches in Fusor.
I must admit i haven't done all of that because i'm still exploring Strobe.
I think you mis-read Megakazbek's post. This is the exact opposite of what he said he wanted. We have an untold number of VST synths of dizzying complexity. Great, and useful, but what we don't have (he believes, FWIW I agree) are many VST synths that are actually difficult to make sound bad - right out of the box.

Maybe this is purely a function of the range of options and synthesis modes a synth has - too many ways of deviating from the solid foundations of VA sound, perhaps. That would explain the popularity of something like Sylenth, which IMO is one of the few that achieves the above. It doesn't even have genuine PWM, FFS, and the modulation options aren't particularly extensive. But boy, can you load it, get inspired and find a place in your track for it.
I don't believe that there's a synth that produces nice sounds no matter what you do. I once had a real Minimoog and it was able to do sounds which were far away from being beautiful if you don't know how to program it.
Besides that Strobe is far away from being complicated, especially if you read the well written manual. But you could add some complexity by using the mod system, the "Stack" function or by loading it into Fusor.
Cypher is more complicated but you can handle it if you have a look at the manual or the tutorial videos.
I haven't tried to program Amber since as a "string machine" it uses a quite different approach to synthesis.

BTW i also love Sylenth1 because it's easy to program and has an awesome sound. But compared to a Jupiter 8 it's quite complex.
Same for Waldorf Largo because it has a very high sound quality and it's easy to program even if the amount of features is quite high.

Interesting. Having never played a Minimoog, I can't comment, but it certainly goes against the mystique around that synth. 3 VST synths I'd say do fit this category, though, are the Korg Polysix / MS20 and the impOSCar. All 3 are built around a solid emulation of a quality filter, and snappy envelopes: simple.

Also I'm interested in the various inter-modulation capabilities within SynthSquad. That's long been a shortcut to ruining a sound in the digital (VA) domain.

In answer to questions about cleaner sounds from Synth Squad:

One thing that is distinctive about different analog synths is the amount of filter and amp drive, which typically can't be changed. Even within a single model, eq the Roland MKS-80, the older design of the synth usually have more drive which people typically prefer, and in later designs the manufacturer "improved" the sound by reducing distortion.

Synth Squad has been designed to by default give people a distinctive character of sound which is asymmetric and slightly distressed, but also to give people the freedom to dial in whatever level of drive they want. There are two main areas of drive: the Filter and the Amp, then the Level control can be used to get you back to a normal level.

For clean pad type sounds try a setting of 0 dB on the Filter Drive and -24 dB on the Amp, then makeup the gain with the Level control - probably around 12 dB or so depending on the number of voices. For an ultra clean pad sound also drop the filter drive to -12 dB. The Filter and Amp drive have quite different tones to them so play till you get what you like. Both of them are polyphonic, so you will only get intermodulation distortion if you mix two oscillators or more oscillators together at different pitches into the Filter and Amp.

Another useful tool to generate a clean but more interesting and alive sound is to use the "VMRand1+-" source and scale it by 0.1 and assign this to filter cutoff, oscillator fine tune, pwm, and any other source you want to be subtly different between the parameters of every voice. This source is a bipolar random number which is different but fixed for every parameter for every voice. Also dial in the "Analog Noise" knob to around 10% which further introduces subtle changes but preserves a clean overall sound.

We're more than aware of the demand for a demo, and it IS coming.

For those of us that already own Synth Squad and love it, thanks for the tips!! Keep em coming!

I could use some help with presets.

1) Somehow, I screwed up my Strobe presets. All of the presets now have doubled, one with the original artist and one with artist as "undefined". I want to clean this up.

2) I downloaded a ton of presets. Some are greyed out (particularly the "shine on you crazy diamond' ones. This is on a mac, and I have no idea why.

3) I don't know where my presets are stored or where to save them. I created a "download" folder off of Library/Audio/Presets/FXpansion/Strobe/ but every time I try to open a preset in Strobe, it defaults to trying to open on my desktop. I also seem to only be able to choose one at a time, I was hoping I could have a Collection called "download" for each synth and browse through them.

I should also add I don't see any of my factory default presets stored on my hard drive anywhere, but they show up in the synths.

Any help would be appreciated.

@filtide no, that's Rory's.. can't you tell a Mancunian from a Londoner? :P

@lagavulin16 (*quality* handle, I might add...) - what you need to do is have a look in Finder...

--> Strobe user presets live in (Home)/Documents/FXpansion/Strobe/Presets

--> Strobe factory presets live in (MacHD)/Library/Application Support/FXpansion/Strobe/Presets, organised by artist folder

If you drop any downloaded files in your user preset folder, after unZIPing them first if they're ZIP files (the unzipped preset names will end in ".Strobe" or ".Fusor" etc., the zipped ones will end in .zip), they should just show up in the patch browser.

As to the duplicates - maybe you've accidentally made a copy of one of those folders, or created a new collection by mistake.. make sure

(MacHD)/Library/Application Support/FXpansion/Strobe/Collections
and
(Home)/Documents/FXpansion/Strobe/Collections
are both empty, if they even exist.

Angus, do problems with with grayed out presets on osx have anything to do with space character presence in names? posix systems can be funny about that...

@michu - not impossible, but given that, to my knowledge, nobody at FXP or on the beta cycle has seen grayed out presets, I say we eliminate pilot error as first cause 8)
