I think it's something like "to your health," or was it "go to hell"? :) It's basically "cheers..."

I think I understand...

But I don't think I can re-submit. I had my fun and I can live with it. I will be giving feedback this month though. There's a lot of good entries so far and some interesting ideas.

Just a couple general observations:

It could just be me, but I sense a tendency for people to typecast Moog (and by Moog, I mean analog) sound: deep sawtooth bass, detuned oscillators, filter sweeps and ringy-self-oscillating timbres. The funny thing is, I've been fooling around with synthy stuff since the late seventies. I'm by no means an expert, but I remember a time when I desperately tried to program my gear NOT to sound like analog synthesizers. I wanted to have that digital crispness and clarity like a Oberheim, Sequential Circuits or even a DX-7. :) It wasn't until later that I stopped feeling self-conscious about my simple mono 2-oscillator synth.

The other thing is that back in the day, people knew a bit more about dynamic range. Now I know I tend to maximize my audio signal in the 16-bit grid I choose to work in, but I also enjoy a soundscape that has valleys as well as peaks. Before digital recording, tape was far more forgiving - it even acted as a kind of limiter to some extent - however synthesizers produced a fairly regular uncomplicated soundwave which allowed pretty precise mixing. There wasn't a whole lot of pumping compression or brick-wall limiting - because you didn't need it. And it wasn't in fashion. I hear a lot of people talk about fancy headphones and monitors, but I think as long as you aren't using cheapo multi-media speakers for playback and you don't overdo it with compression/limiting, you should be OK. Just periodically check your mix by doing a side-by-side comparison with something similar you know is a good mix. If all else fails, turn everything down and bring up each track one-by-one without letting any clip individually or let the master clip. Then apply compression until you get the effect you want and normalize the mix when you're done.

You're lucky...

No vote and a minimonsta for every one who enters the contest this month. :-o

I also saw the "FREE synth..." thread in the market forum.
Can we have more info please..

Wouldn't that be cool if it turned out to be that way after the contest closes... :-) Also, added stuff for everyone who writes a review? Heh - how easy greed rears its ugly head... :)

I've just submited my entry this month.

The Call of the Universe

It was to be an homenage to Bob Moog but chances are that finished more like a global vision of the after death.

Well, I hope next month be more light.

Anyway I hope you like it!

I'm not sure if I understand whatever is happening this month, but I understand that Rob is a bit of a "read between the lines" cipher and sometimes I think that's because he's making it up as he goes along or he's fundamentally ambivalent about the outcome.

Greed would be very bad indeed - this is supposed to be for fun. More "show and tell" than Mercury Awards.

I don't understand what's going on?.. are you saying the prize is minimonstah?...

If so.. it seems folish for me to buy minimonstah to create a tune for a competition that minimonstah is the prize? as I'm planning to at the moment.. if dave spiers ever gets back from holiday and authorises the licence transfer..;)

To be frank, the main reason I do join these 'contests' is simply to hear what you people think of what I do.

With all the changes to this month rules, I just realized my track is not named according to the rule, can I change it?
Does it matter if there is no voting?
How can Minimonsta be a prize if there is no voting?

I ate it... :D... can do some great phased burps now though

actually my track for this has turned into my track for the katrina CD.. and isn't really relevant to Moog anymore... so I'd have to start from scratch for this compe... no.. erm... gathering of songs. :)

I hope it won't be a contest now - although I wouldn't object to people posting lists of favourites and/or their reviews.
