Ok! Ok! So I stupidly tripped over the soapbox. I was over-reacting a tad. Sorry to interrupt what was a thoughtful and informative thread. But thanks for allowing my rant in an otherwise civil discussion.

bmanic - I heard so many artifacts that it hurt. But the BlockFishBuzz sample was the most painful. A successful experiment. I didn't mean to pull it out of context. Maybe I'm still a little too sensitive after my mastering engineer's new K3 brickwall philosophy.

urosh - Thanks for the encouragement. As dangerous as that can be.

And Mod, I totally hear what your typing. Context is everything. But some contexts are more pleasant than others.

Well, lets please leave the artistic, subjective, "music" point of compressors for another thread and concentrate on how the compressor itself sounds, unless you guys want to discus music and production?

Howdy people,
can somebody point me to a nice free reliable
server where I can post some files for this thread ?

BTW Neodynium : when I checked it back then I found it
to be extremly versatile but it was kinda slow for me
to work on ( loads of controls ). So ,can someone tell
us is Neodyn totaly MIDI controlable ? If I can asign
relevant compresion parameters ( zone borders , att ,rel
and ratios ) to some real knobs this can turnout to be
one heluva tool . ModuLR : congrats for gettin to work
fast with this tool (thou, most video eds are know ride
their mouseez and kbt shortcutz like lightning, maybe
that would be explanation) but moreso u realy pay
attention to what u hear . Maybe u should do some mix
friendlyer processin plugins ?

BTBTW this thread seem to be kind of ending . Should we
call it a quit , and stop posting examples?

bmanic I agree completely whats the topic , but I have
to say one thing :
in my small humble experience compressors are not for
making things loud, u have volume knob on amp for that.
Comps are helping tool to make things sit together
better in the mix, that is to make mix sound BETTER not
louder. And great mix will actually sound louder
cos percived level is not (just) about RMS readings
on vu meter. And ask any good mastering engeneer and
he/she will tell you : its much easyer to make great
mix ,where all bits sit together well and where all thingsare tracked properly , loud as f**k with limiter.
I rant cus for long time I made same mistake :
loud=good, compressors=loud. If u all know this sorry
for ranting.

Compression can be used for a lot of purposes, and using
it for one does not automatically cancel out the other.

Edit, we are getting more and more into song specific decisions, and what FX suites what song etc.

Btw. I at least will try to keep this thread alive and will post more examples once I get back to the university studio. I still want to run the drumloop (anybody got more versatile material??) trough the Joe Meek VC1 and the Tubetech LCA 2B.

No no bmanic, u misunderstood me, that rant was not
thread related, in any way. Its just thats the mistake
i made for long time, cus i had nobody to tell me
better, so if someone new to production is reading, I just
wanted to make a clear message on one of common mistakes
lot of people make. Everybody know comps are dynamic
range controllers but not a clear idea what should u
do with them. So I thought its nice place/time to
pop that declaration of mine. Sorry if it confused
anybody, it had nothing to do with any opinion on this
thread.

BTW only purpose any device should be used for is
to make mix sound beter , given the right CONTEXT
of music ( I for one adore Gories and production on
all three albums, but technically it is far cry from
any perfecton or high fidelity. Its just that for their
music it was just about perfect. And I cant imagine that
any of Link Wrays riffs would get into colective
subconcousness of RnR freaks if it was recorded with
technicall perfection in mind (Just imagine "Jack the
Ripper" with Piter Gabriel production. I would comite
suicide. ))

Silly people. Have you never heard of endoprphin/dominion? Dominion is a dream for drums. I don't think you could technically call it a compresser (in the sense of what most people expect in one). Dominion works miracle for those whose genres focus on things such as hip hop. It's perfect for my needs. dominion/endorphin all the way!!!
