i've seen all the photos of his giant analog synths and read of his affection for the original Waldorph Wave, i know he was a programmer for Geoff Downs circa Buggles, and i've seen movies he's done the soundtracks for...but damned if the one piece of music stuck in my memory, you could hit me upside the head with his music and i wouldn't recognize it....Ildon wrote:Hans Zimmer. Then again, I think most western composers in the film music business are overrated.

continuing the hockey is overrated rant
and how is that bertuzzi jackass not in prison right now? what the hell is that? i was listening to the radio today and somebody said that he's playing the league again. bunch of bloody nuts. they can all go to hell. and my uncle treated once to some front row behind the bench seats at the gardens (really nice of him) but i almost got hit with the god damn puck and there was a fight every few minutes and all of the fans cheered the assholes on everytime a fight broke out. there's some good rolemodels for your children assholes

On the question of sport (haha) I would say it is ALL overrated.

Hi all.
Saw a couple of pages back that a lot of folks thought Nirvana was overrated. Someone even mentioned that Kurt was a "functional idiot". Well if you ask me, I’d say that even if that’s true, just one listening of the “watershed” Never Mind album is enough to convince anyone that the man had the ability to write catchy tunes and sound discontent at the same time. Man, there are some nifty tunes on that disc. Although it was pointed out in this thread that he didn’t write all the songs himself, the fine print on my copy says he did.
Sure, production-wise they may have been a little lost till Butch Vig came in to add that commercial Grunge sheen to the guitars and the overall sound, but that disc does have some great tunes. Looking back, I get the feeling that it wasn’t Nirvana, but the entire Grunge thing that was overrated. The only other decent band to emerge from the so-called movement was Stone Temple Pilots. And Soundgarden, if they are considered to have been a part of that scene. But of course, this is just my personal opinion.
Also, any such specilised “movement” becomes overrated when it has the marketing depts. rather than talent behind it. Such a situation makes the whole thing sub-average, but overrated.
Listening to an album a while after all the hype and excitement surrounding it has died down always helps to put it in proper musical [and NOT cultural, sociological or historic] perspective. I think Nirvana’s Never Mind album puts up well to this test.

you know who's over-rated? R. Kelly...maybe not by anyone 'round here, but lots of people consider him the top r&b guy today...ever hear one of his records? there is so much shlock and contrived "playa" crap, stupid skit-type stuff and corny puesdo-opera and other goofy tidbits, it's pretty yucky...i actually kinda liked that one "step in the name of love", but i'm a moron... i remember seeing some crap on tv a few years ago where they asked a bunch of kids what their favorite song was and half of them said "i believe i can fly"...if my kids said they liked that song i'd rap them across the knuckles with the cd case...
and golf is most definately over-rated...the whole golf culture is full of people i'd like to see catch a good case o' bird flu....i think i'll do doughnuts on the local public course tomorrow... hey, let's all do it!

Pity we can’t turn this discussion a bit towards jazz [not all the way, but just a wee bit!] and start an argument on say, Charlie Parker versus John Coltrane [I know, it’s ridiculous, but like ah said on one of me posts, ah just loves a good argument!].
Or Miles Davis. Miles Davis kicks everyone’s rear-ends. Or could kick. Anyone who disagrees with that statement? [c’mon, puddem up! Hup, hup, puddem up!].
BTW, once at the 1987 Kennedy Center Lifetime Achievement Awards Ceremony, some woman asked Miles, “What have you done so important in your life? Why are you here?” Miles [who wasn’t receiving any awards that night] simply said, “I’ve changed music five or six times, so I guess that’s what I’ve done.”

No jazz? Then how about a Satriani vs. Vai argument? Or a DMX versus Dre versus Cypress Hill bash? [Love ’em all though. Jes’ wanted to see the kind of opinions/responses such a topic would evoke!]
