the type of music i'm doing, when i'm fooling around is generally something like this improv:

but the funny thing is the sentiment "no wonder you don't like it, because you hate the music it's good at".. well that isn't how i see instruments. i don't see any good instrument as being limited to any genre or playing style and in this case i do, i see sylenth as being limited and that's why i say it's no good.

personally i think the walter carlos style classical music done with synths is the best place they can be used, to be honest. stuff like vangelis is.. eh, ok in my opinion but not great. then we have lots of other stuff though by for example yellow magic orchestra and other such groups where they sort of just took existing style and used synths as the instruments, mixed with all sorts of other instruments. violins, electric bass, horns (trumpet, sax, etc) mixed with synth i think is just awesome. piano and synth is awesome too.

anyway just because i feel like with some people my point of view is totally misunderstood.

by the way, the mp3 is just three instances of the same synth with minor patch variation and the midi was just an improvisation and i could only hear one voice while playing it. i'm not much of a music person, i like the synths actually and other instruments more than the music.

If you're talking about Kevorkian's production and mix on Electric Cafe or the later remix album that statement might make a fraction of sense..

Either way you clearly have not even a minute idea of what you're talking about..if I was to describe one thing Sylenth, absolutely does well is those fast envelope/attack filtered basses much like the modular Roland and Sequential gear that was particularly in use at that time.

Flutes? What acid are you actually ON? The last time Kraftwerk tooted a flute (a real one to boot) in anything was in Autobahn in the late 70's...

EDIT : um i just listened to your little 'improv' (i would describe that as avoiding a melody) there on that horribly generic portamento sound...that pretty much answered the questions i had. The End.

I'm kind of surprised that you say that, but you don't like "mindless electronic dance music" since that stuff is all about the sounds, rhythm and atmosphere more so than the music.

i've tried sylenth several times. i always hear the typical vsti twang (i hope there are some who know what i talk about. it's a hard quality to describe) i say save your money and get vangaurd, or shell out just a little more and get nexus. i'm in no way a fan boy, but i can't even remember what the nexus flap was about. all i know is those are some awesome dance synths

Nexus is a lot more than "just a little more" than Vanguard.

Nexus is a lot more than "just a little more" than Vanguard.

Erm, I think it's more likely he meant a little more than you would for Sylenth.

Although, even that is $150 more.

Any reference on that one? - AFAIK both English and German versions of Man Machine were produced in Düsseldorf (an American engineer was flown in though). No offense, but maybe you've just listened to an old record in comparison to a digitally remastered cd?

Wow! If Sylenth has a twang then Vanguard sounds like cardboard...

urs, perhaps i was just confused. i was under the impression the radio edits (which were actually reproductions, not merely edits) for airplay in the united states and those versions of the tracks on the albums were produced in studio in california.

i might even be thinking of a different album, in any case the original german version sounds hugely different from the american version, where-ever it was produced. the point of what i was saying was simply that i don't like the sounds in the original version while the sounds in the american/english version are great.

Its an interesting point because I don't remember Kraftwerk ever entering the charts here, maybe The Model just scraped into the Top 40 but it wouldn't have had much airplay, but pretty much everyone of my generation know who they are. Finally - thought I must be the only one here. Boring and uninspiring - sums them up nicely.

Does any other VST sound as good as Sylenth?
