True, very nice !Hink wrote:btw dont you just love the retro look of the Frenzel in this pic?
I could imagine some retro-futuristic gizmo on top (not a complete cage, just a few chrome tubes or something, maybe crossed like the skeleton of a pavilion tent), would enhance the looks even more ...
Anyway, if it sounds as good as it looks ...

When I was a teenager, the non-reverb JCM900 was my primary amp. I used to get a killer tone out of it with Gain 1 all the way down, Gain 2 all the way up, and then hit hard at the front end with an MXR Micro Amp. Also, Dave Navarro played one on Ritual de lo Habitual, although his tone on that album was harsh like a buzz saw and sounded entirely different from the tone I got from it (I always preferred his tone on Nothing's Shocking).susiwong wrote:Crunch C is JCM 900 (wouldn't have needed that last option)
I would pick one up today if you had said it could replace your 1987. Anyway, what must be done to make an LM sound as good as yours? And, ideal for me, as expected it can't even begin to touch the uncivilized roar of my 1987, but it covers most other classic Marshall tones gracefully - talk about a win-win situation.

Hi Eric,
what you describe (gain 1 down) basically is similar to a later period 800 on the single channel (dual master) 900 amps, sounds allright, agreed, but isn't typical 900.
Owned one too, back then, did a good job, but had to go for an early MV prototype JMP.
Crunch B on the Anniversary will probably do an even better version of the tone you remember, the 900 Crunch C is voiced for that "both gains" hair metal tone of the day.
I still have no clue what makes my 1987 so special, believe me, I'd feel better if I knew.
It's 100% stock again, my tech reversed some less than stellar early Diezel mods, and he is pedantic.
Probably just some parts tolerances adding up favourably, don't know.
To convert a later model LM to early specs like mine is easy.
- change the (cathode ?) resistors at the tube sockets to a value suitable for EL34s, put in a good set of 34s, rebias.
- change 4 or 5 little caps and resistors in the lead channel preamp
- all in all 1 hour of work, $5 parts plus tubes, no big deal.
It's worth it imho, EL34s are part of classic Marshall tone.
Not that the later 6100LMs are bad amps, some people even prefer them ...

Eric,
here's some info related to the conversion, I'm not tech enough to judge them, but they are a start.
There is lots of competent info, just google.

You might have to up the parts price estimate to $30 or something
Hope that helps.

ummm...if I am reading the shipping rates correctly http://www.ceriatone.com/Rates/WebRev4/USA_4.htmUncle E wrote:You could get a Ceriatone kit, that way a lot of the wiring is pre-assembled for you. They have an 18W Marshall with a Matchless-style EF86 channel that has always seemed cool to me:Hink wrote:That's why I want an 18 watt Marshall head replica kit from weber (mojo sells them too), the deal is though...build? Or have built? Weber has those mods so you can do what you want to it, but they have techs that will build them as well. I asked for a quote and with the mods I want the price for the amp and assembly was around 800usd which imo isn't bad. If I built one before I even tried to fire it up I would pay a local tech to check it out which means it would probably be closer to 600usd. This is my plan for 'that' time of the year next year, I would feel better aboout having it built but I would feel better about me and it if I built it

btw, we're a Ceriatone dealer now. Can you say 10% off?
shipping of complete amps with cabinets would be 150 to over 200 dollars and 125-158 dollars...is that right?

Yes but it's much less if you order at the same time we're ordering.Hink wrote:shipping of complete amps with cabinets would be 150 to over 200 dollars and 125-158 dollars...is that right?

well keep me posted, I really need to hold off until next year but that's not set in stone because things change quickly...so let me know when you're making an order and hopefully one time will sync with my current situationUncle E wrote:Yes but it's much less if you order at the same time we're ordering.Hink wrote:shipping of complete amps with cabinets would be 150 to over 200 dollars and 125-158 dollars...is that right?
Do they do custom mods? Like would they add a 1/2 power switch to the 50 watt yeti?
Hibidy...they also have a Chupacabra

Yes. For example, a popular mod for the Dumble models is a Lift Negative Ground switch so you can imagine the depth to where the mods can go. Just remind me when you're ready to get one and I'll find out the details.Hink wrote:Do they do custom mods? Like would they add a 1/2 power switch to the 50 watt yeti?
Currently, I'm putting an order in for one kit and one complete amp, that way I can build the kit using the complete one as a guide.

I don't understand. I thought "blackstar" was one of those boutique amps but now everytime I see one it's low priced.
Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I just think it's kinda weird.

They have the complete line from affordable consumer stuff (HT) over flexible allrounders (Series One) to point-to-point amps (Artisan).hibidy wrote:I don't understand. I thought "blackstar" was one of those boutique amps but now everytime I see one it's low priced.
