I use a 2 inch usb extender; works great... but you don't need a dongle anymore and get a couple direct computer activations... if one dies, you can always use another till they restore the original one. Personally, I like being able to take the dongle with me offsite if need be so I prefer that approach; you still retain all your computer activations even if you have a dongle problem.
I would just go to direct computer authorization on a laptop... given it's mobility, why even risk a dongle? You have multiple options here...
"scumbag"??? your words, lnikj not mine... and you get more than one direct activation... Gosh, the hate... would love to get back to relayer... this tired old argument, which shouldn't be so heated anymore with all the changes, is NOT what this thread should be focusing on... it is what it is... deal with it. It's relatively painless and very flexible these days...
Sorry the OP has been diverted by ilok hate...can we get back to "Relayer"?

I know... I've been dealing with climate deniers on FB all day...makes one kinda grouchy. Can we get back to this fantastic product now? I'm sorry if I used words that sounded like I was implying that... really didn't mean that. OK? Please? Pretty please?

There's a lot of reasons to not like ilok. Some have already been mentioned. Another reason for me is because it installs system drivers. System drivers operate in kernel mode and have COMPLETE access to your computer! There's nothing preventing them from doing anything they want. And we don't know what they could be doing. Installing ilok is making your computer wide-open to PACE.
I'm pretty sure they're not doing anything illegal, but the risk is there. If it was the only system available I would probably install it, but there is other options available, with more "respect" to the user.
I remember in the mid and late 90's, big 3D software suites like 3D Studio and Lightwave, costing thousands of dollars, coming with their parallel dongles. It's been years since they are dongle-free. The only market I know with dongle now is the music market. Computer activation is is step in the right direction, but the installation of system drivers is not something I like at all.

Offtopic, but while many of the bigger packages have indeed dropped dongle useage (they're now mostly challenge-response activation based on a unique system ID), some 3D tools are still dongle based eg the very popular VRay renderer.xx JPRacer xx wrote: I remember in the mid and late 90's, big 3D software suites like 3D Studio and Lightwave, costing thousands of dollars, coming with their parallel dongles. An idiot on Set Theory:

Yes, if they're programmed that way.

If this is true then no more ilok software and libraries for me. I will continue to use the software on my current computer but not my new one when I purchase another one.

Would you then never install a printer to your computer? Same thing there. System drivers. Or a graphics card. Same thing there. System drivers. Or any peripherial ever? It all uses system drivers of some sort.
Don't be ridiculous.

Dont forget to remove all your hard drives, your mouse, keyboard, and all other USB devices, any PCI/PCIe boards, and dismantle your motherboard. All of those things have system drivers which operate in kernel mode and also have COMPLETE access to your computer.patchhunter wrote:Another reason for me is because it installs system drivers. Unlike iLoks, though, USB keyboards and mice and hard drive firmware are known to be useable vectors for accessing your system.

Best to buy yourself a guitar, and a pen and paper.

That would be great, but now the Tin Foil Hat Brigade have arrived I fear it may be too late.....Sampleconstruct wrote:Why not make a new iLok debate-thread and leave this one here for Relayer, pretty pleaaaase.
I'm actually enjoying Relayer for short delay/modulation/doubling fx.
The flexibility of this plug in is amazing, the more time spent with it, the more I realise how deep the programming can go.
