Will they allow that?

Sell Cubase 12 and keep Cubase 11 on the dongle?

Post

Highly doubt it.

Steinberg never disappoints.
That means you're not eligible.

Well, those download or activation managers are always glitchy... haven't come across one company where such software works perfectly. Well, maybe iLok. (Really)
Except for that time when it bricked everyone's PC's when you tried to install certain Air/Sonivox plugins
Take a single oscillator, producing a drone. Send it to the wave shaper, altering the tone.
This can be a triangle, Sawtooth or a square. Modulate the pulse width, nobody will care

I can only say how it went for me.

It’s a feature not a bug.

Post

Hmm, the improvements for audiowarp are really interesting. I hope that includes a triplet grid in the audioeditor…
The rest…well, I’ll have to see. Doesn’t excite me much. Still no improvement on the clip envelope handling, it seems. What a pity.

..ok, after further watching, the new MIDI remote system seems cool, much better than the old one (which isn’t difficult as that was an abomination). I have a nanocontrol which i never really used so far because integration was no fun in cubase. Will give that another try.

Well, need to try it before passing too quick a judgement. I hope the grace period thingy works for me, I bought the 11 upgrade after their announcement…

Post

Well, great, the "activation manager" has no grace period updates for me, even though I registered my C11 update on 11/11/2021, two days after the grace period start. Lets hope its just their servers being hammered again (seems like it, now eLicenser complains that no connection to the server could be made).
And now my old C11 license is gone from my eLicenser and Cubase complains that it has no license. Great.
My fault, of course. I should've known better to expect to have a smooth transition on day one of C12 launch.

I can't imagine any Cubase user wanting that. It would be easier to get Ableton if that's your thing.
Actually, plenty of Cubase users have been asking for it on the Steinberg forum (I'm not one of them).

1. Run eLicenser. Do maintenance. It will change your Cubase Pro 11 license to say "grace period eligible".
2. Run Activation Manager. Select grace period check from the top right hidden menu.
3. It will ask if you want to upgrade, and Steinberg will email you a code. Steinberg Download Assistant is required to use the code.
4. The SDA will ask if you want to upgrade and launch eLicenser again. It will change the dongle license to say "Not Upgradeable", and activate your machine.
5. You should now be able to launch Cubase 12.

Note: Resist doing any of this for a good day or two, if you don't want the headache of having to repair your eLicenser. Chances are high it will hang half-way through the process. The eLicenser servers are getting hammered atm and, worst case, it might not be able to recover from an error.

Cubase 12 itself is not without issues, though anyone who's used a x.0.0 release in recent years will probably be expecting this. It would not properly launch here. The VST scanning process was hanging, and I had to manually kill it then complete a manual scan inside Cubase. Why that worked and a launch scan didn't I have no idea, but the error appeared to be mixed in with the new license system as that would eventually hang too.

I noticed that shutting down the program happens instantly now (there was always a little lag with the dongle). There will probably be some other little speed ups like that, related to ditching the dongle.

They want ableton features in Cubase. They should go over to Ableton. Why mess up a perfectly good linear DAW with those kinda fucntions.
Don't trust those with words of weakness, they are the most aggressive

I don't think so. Anyone buying an upgrade needs to have the other license in the dongle to validate it, AFAIK

I once thought I wanted to see it in Cubase. But now I feel that Cubase should remain Cubase and not try to pretend it is other products.

I'm more interested in getting larger control siders/handles on the UI (for increasing/decreasing window and track sizes) and continual performance improvements.

Plus there has been a bug in the past couple versions of Cubase not removing project folders if a new project isn't saved. This leads to a ton of empty folders if you enjoy jumping into Cubase, trying something, then jumping out without saving.

Nope. You'd only need it to get onto the new system. IE If purchasing an upgrade from versions of Cubase prior to 12. When you do this it'll change the dongles license name to say "Not upgradeable", and you'll then be on the new system.

BTW Considering Steinberg will totally kill eLicenser, anyone wanting to upgrade from earlier versions of Cubase likely has, at most, another 2 years. IE Past Cubase 14 (maybe even 13) it won't be possible to upgrade from versions earlier than 12, because there will be no elicenser server to check against. They'd have to use an alternative verification like proof of purchase.

Steinberg likely aren't too worried about earlier versions marked "not upgradeable" kicking around. It's a total dead end on the Mac (no M1 native), and even on the PC might not be the sure compatibility bet it once was given stuff like Windows 11 etc, and you'd always be locked in to versions which use eLicenser anyway..

It does mean users will need to look out for anyone selling "non upgradeable" licenses as full versions on places like Ebay. Though any complaint, to Steinberg, might see them nuke that sellers account for breaching their licensing terms..
