I just picked up the latest Sound on Sound.. there's a 3 page "technique" article covering rendering VST instrument parts using SX.

The same instructions for Tracktion would barely make a paragraph

(and Tracktion would provide seperate time stamped BWAVS with suitable names.. the method described in SoS results in all parts being combined into one really long audio file which presumably then needs to be manually chopped up and re-arranged in whatever host you mix in )

That is good to know about Tracktion, i just found a demo. so far it seems promising.

there's two choices, freeze, and individual track rendering (export). The latter I've assigned under a shortcut. I point at a track and press the shortcut. voila.

I suppose t2 will read your mind so you won't have to click anything if it's that much easier?

You have to manually solo the MIDI track, then export a wav file which then needs naming manually. The point of the 3 page article was a workaround that could export many such tracks without needing so much manual input..

.. of course in Tracktion you just tick the "render each track to a seperate file" option in the export dialogue!

We have Nuendo 3 at work (same diff) and it's basically the same. As soon as I can drum up the cash, I'm moving to SX 3-land, the new features are excellent. The first release was bumpy (as always?), but I think most SX 3'ers are happy now.

The difference is quite minimal really. Have a look at the "new features of SX3" by steinberg. I doubt there's much there you'll absolutely need.

YMMV vary but to me SX3 is the most stable cubase ever. (although you have to put that statement to steinberg reputation perspective )

Yeah, that's easier than Cubase. You gotta admit, Kingston: aren't there times where you wish you could just hit "render" and it just adds the file to the Pool - which it needs to do anyway - instead of having to solo, navigate to your project folder, make sure you have the exact file specs...personally, I've always found this senselessly tedious, especially because of the Pool concept.

Now something that should level the playing field a bit is "Freeze", as you can freeze a VSTi and just keep the file. But I, for one, like the Traktion method much better.

OK, maybe I'm missing something or got used to the "old ways", but here's what I do:

Solo VSTi:
Shortcut: "Export Audio"
Dialogue comes up, select filename, samplerate, tick off "Export to...Pool and/or Track"
Render File
File appears in Cubase.

What do you do?

Perhaps I should mention: the object of the excercise was to get the whole arrangement into Pro-Tools because the author doesn't like mixing in Cubase.
