just for kicks here's a fun little realtime recording i made last night on the space shuttle synth. warning - there's no dynamics processing and it gets really heavy in the middle

very cool..nice live tweaking. It sounds good even withought effects like delay, ect

dare i ask: what is the 'space shuttle' synth?

thanks Tim! It's just what MaxSynths called my modular a couple pages back when he asked for some samples, so I figured I'd use that name just for kicks in this post

Unfortunately my monitors cannot come more than about a foot and a half from the wall and I'm stuck using my shitty DJ mixer because my nicer one is being used as my control centre.

Are those Auralex monitor pad thingies any good? Do they make a difference?

My monitors stand on my desk and I was wondering whether I ought to get some to decouple the monitors from the desktop and the drawers underneath.

Well, I put them on when I first set the monitors up so I'm not sure what it sounds like without them. They are only $40 for a pair, so definitely worth trying out.

@the chase: good call on blocking the front opening on the alesis. you might improve the sound as well by placing the left speaker on the right and the right one on the left. I did that in a friend's studio with those, and having the tweeters on the outside improved the field.

I use 2" thick rigid fiberglass for under my monitors. Leftovers from making acoustic treatment. Same sort of thing as the mo-pads, only free. With the mo-pads you can get angled wedges for desks too.
The Primacoustic Recoil Stabilizers are supposedly the best.

No matter what, getting the speakers decoupled from the speaker stands will improve the sound. Better stereo imaging and more accurate bass specifically.
