trying the demo and loving it .
ONe question though , the make up gain knob is for adjusting the overall gain/level after the compression , right ?
Now in my host ( renoise ) we have pre and post faders on the mixing desk , so I assume if I bring up the post fader in renoise , this is essentially the same as the make up gain in the glue or not ?
I have never been a fan of compression on the masterbus , because I think it's better to get your dynamics /volumes right from the source (separate channels ) , since changing volume on channels can drastically alter the overall compression ,but using this compressor subtly gives and overall smoothness to the mix ...I just insert it at the final stage of mixing .

Yep make up gain is post-compression, just like the post fader on your daw. This is compression 101 and you shouldn't even really be trying to comment on the sound quality of compressors until you know atleast how attack, release, threshold and ratio parameters affect the compression action. To say you think The Glue sounds good, but then ask what the make up knob does, is like me talking about how awesome a Porsche 911 5urbo is and then asking "what's that 3rd pedal next to the break?"

condescending much? maybe he has ears...
it's also not specifically called make-up gain on each and every compressor out there.

No kidding! Give the guy a break.

The lead engineer at a studio I used to work for, wasn't very technically knowledgeable but he had amazing critical listening skills. On any given day, he might ask me about a parameter on a reverb he didn't understand or how to setup auto punching on the HD24s but his skill at the console was unmatched (at least by anyone else working there at the time).

I believe that The Glue's makeup gain happens before it's clipping stage, so if you have clipping active it might be worth while to have a post compressor gain stage so that you can control the overall volume without affecting the clipping behavior.

Ummm...you mean "brake". So, extending your irrelevant analogy even further, this is something you would learn in elementary school and you shouldn't even really be trying to offer a written opinion without the ability to spell a common 5-letter word???

wow hold your horses futurefields , I was just asking if there is any significant difference between the gain adjust and post volume fader on my daw,I thought that he gain adjust might introduce some side effects due the modelling nature of the plugin .
...after closer examination there seems to be a difference .
If gain adjust is set to +4db and in my host the post fader is set to -6 db the overal output should be -2db , if I changed the ( glue's ) gain to + 8db and my daw to -10db the output is also -2db , but the rendered files looked different, most noticeable at the transients .
On a sidenote ;, I 've been making music for more then 10 years hard/soft ware etc..and I know how a compressor works , I just don't use it that often ... , I tried this demo because It might bring some nice colouration into the mix and it did

Sorry for being condescending, i jump to conclusions too quickly and am rude. If I can provide some info, like Justin said the make up gain is post-compressor and pre-clipper, so if you have the clipper enabled it will change the sound depending on how close the audio is coming to 0dbfs (the clipper circuit begins shaping the audio around -0.5dbfs I believe)

I believe the make up gain itself is transparent, as this is how the developer wanted it. Its also slightly less colorful than an SSL 4K bus comp, it sounds more like the newer rackmount GSSL bus comp, which isn't a bad thing, it just means its a little more transparent so you can use other plugins for adding color/character.

Yes, as I said above, the makeup gain stage on The Glue comes before the clipping stage (you can see this in the block diagram via the quick start guide) so an addition post plug-in gain stage is useful.

I never thought a compressor could make such a big difference in sound. It was instant WOW!! And I even do electronic music, so I can only imagine how awesome this is on acoustic stuff.

From the bottom of my music heart, thank you Andy for this! And also for making it affordable. I will tell everyone and their mom about this one.
