Hahaha. Logics EASI drivers are the future and you know it. You're just to stubborn and old fashioned to admit it.

Oh shit - you're right!jupiter8 wrote:Hahaha. Logics EASI drivers are the future and you know it. You're just to stubborn and old fashioned to admit it.
I still remember the Creamware and M-Audio users (from what I remember, the only companies ever delivering EASI drivers) being all so happy about that driver protocol. So happy that most of them either threw their cards away or ditched Logic - or both.
This (and the "let's not use the plugin format of the competition") episode perfectly proved that ASIO and VST were totally useless formats. That's why both of them have entirely vanished from earth these days (from an earth that still is flat, I should add).
And what about that f**ked up wheel? It's certainly not rounded enough, we defenitely need a replacement!

Pushing new "standards" to make more money. Old story - different pusher. MS is notorious for pushing their own 'standards" so they could have the copyright. I'm not sure what's the deal with that, considering they're practically drowning in dough, but I'm somewhat certain it's not gonna work against such standards as ASIO, thankfully. I have personally never seen better audio drivers than RME ASIO drivers [although all ASIO drivers are superb to any other considering latency]. I like the minimalist approach, but functional, stable, and fast... well I've said it all before
Will MS come up with something to try overtake the VST, too? Only time will tell, but I seriously doubt it. I think [or hope?] MS will not be such a serious player in OS game some 5 years from now, at least in the "pro" world - graphics, video and music. Average Joe will always know only for Windows and nothing else, and MS's R&D team is making damn sure to stay that way, which is kinda easy to do with so much "resources" in their hands.
Strangely MS didn't make Vista incompatible with ASIO, and push Wave-RT instead. That would be a bold move... although IMO, Vista is a bold move however you look at it.
Cheers!

Of course it's not, when I write numerous pitfalls followed by for instance it means it's one example out of many, unless I got the English language screwed again. They are so many things wrong for audio with that OS I discovered after a few days trying to get decent playback with no drop-out out of this thing, it's not even funny. I should have made a list right from the start, but I didn't think about it and now it's too late as I've already forgoten more than half of them. Not such a problem thought, because the laptop is going back.DuX wrote:Go to task scheduler an' tell'em to go d'hell, or you can always stop the task scheduler service in administrative tools>services, same thing. No, that wasn't me.

Decommoditization. It's how to steal something free (as in beer and freedom) and make people pay for a non-free (freedom and beer both) version. I learned about Microsoft's stance on decommoditization from the Hallowe'en Memo affair, so the link above goes to Ralph Levien's page examining that aspect of those notorious (and popular) hijinks.
How to decommoditize a protocol
There are six things you can do:
* Make it more complex
* Incompletely specify it
* Fail to document it
* Change it rapidly
* Use encumbered intellectual property
* Add value (i.e. solve more problems, better performance)
Of these, only the last really makes the software more useful to users.

I should point out that I'm not of the opinion that Microsoft is pure evil and nothing but. They've got some good stuff. And some okay and some bad.
I'm irritated at them because they ought to be able to play fair and still make jillions of currency units per annum. And they can't/won't/don't. Play fair, that is. Grar. End rantlet, back to work.

Meffy, they don't play fair because of their inherent inferiority. They never have an original idea, the ideas they steal and manipulate into their own version is generally inferior in one or more ways, so playing fair is like saying, "LETS WASTE RESOURCES" to them. Just look at WMA compared to MP3...WMA on a handheld music device consumes about 2/3 more power than mp3 with very little improvement in quality...OGG, on the other hand...
Their copycat methods and practices pretty much prevent them from playing fair, else face a true commercial suicide. That's basically all it amounts to.

I think 'the rough-natured MS' is just Bill The Nerd trying to hang tough with all the bullys that used to laugh at him...

Well, it's a dead format- pretty much- hence the past imperfect tense. Couldn't survive vs the inherent (apparently - I've never coded for dx) technical superiority of VST, plus VST is and was always cross-platform- Directx on the other hand (!)

Yep, Microsoft and cross-platform are two totally different terms.
IMO, that, in the first place, is their weakest spot, which is not good for their future, to say it politely. Pushing their own standards will get them nowhere, because with each passing day more and more people are pushing back. VST is here to stay

To put it broadly, I think MS is just a phase, not just ME or Vista. Now flame me as much as you want but you'll see a few years from now... but I'm not saying we still won't have Windows and that MS will seas to exist, though
. I'm just thinking that from now on, MS will slowly become smaller and smaller player in OS's game. They'll sell other stuff, though.
