to bump this thread a last time i'm pleased to show you a work in progress using mainly EWQLSO platinum, and synful solo violin using many instance of valhalashimmer, instead of any other reverb units

An instance of WS for each instrument
octave down settings for piccolo flute and violin, each...
octave up setting for double-bass section,
dual setting for harp, octave up and down
dual setting with discreet pitch shift for gongs

...very interesting to see how the shimmer effet blends with a symphonic orchestral flavour and seems capable to create a convincing bridge between "symphonic" and "electronic" atmospheres

I also noticed this plugin shines and sounds wonderful on symphonic orchestra type instruments and compositions. The sparser arrangements seem to make it sound best, adding dense ambient layers that sit perfectly in the background of the mix.

Trying to play Clint Mansell's "Lux Aeterna" on the keyboard

Only using one instance of Shimmer as a send for all the instruments (Cakewalk Dimension Pro)

I've started a series of tips and tricks posts about ValhallaShimmer on my blog. The first one, about Diffusion, went up earlier today:

http://valhalladsp.wordpress.com/2010/1 ... diffusion/

More updates as I write more blog posts. Any topics people would like to see covered?

The next tips and tricks post covers how to get a desired reverb envelope (attack/decay) in ValhallaShimmer. There are several controls that interact with each other, so I give an overview of those, as well as a suggested starting place.

http://valhalladsp.wordpress.com/2010/1 ... -envelope/

This is the last "wordy" blog post. I have several more in the queue, that are short and to the point.

For three seconds, I was 100% sure my GFX card is failing. Then I realized it's just a snowfall javascript thingie. Anyway, thanks for the informative post. :)

The snow surprised me, too. I remember enabling it last winter, but I didn't know how to turn it on this year. It must have turned on due to the date. It actually snowed here in Seattle before the Javascript snow started.

I could resist no longer... this thing is absolutely wonderful.

The latest tips and tricks blog post is a bit more specific, and discusses how to emulate the "Bloom" algorithm from the Alesis Midiverb II:

Thank you for posting the blogs about Shimmer. I find them very interesting reading and quite helpful in how to better use the plugin to its full advantage!

I might have to revisit my old Wedge just to compare. Just referencing the manual... I don't see a specific "Bloom" parameter but it looks like on the Wedge it was called the Shape parameter under the Early Reflections settings?

The Valhalla blog is really great reading. One of the things I love about your articles is that some of the information is also helping me to better understand and use my other reverb units, including my hardware units. Just when you thought you knew everything... right? :D

So... thanks, Sean! Keep 'em coming!!!

As far as I know, the "Bloom" algorithms were only available on the Midiverb II. I have a Quadraverb and Midiverb IV as well, and neither of these have anything that is close to the "Bloom." Reverb algorithms that have Shape/Spread parameters, like the later Lexicon algorithms, might be able to simulate the sound (slow attack, long decay), but the Bloom algorithms seemed to use a different approach for the slow attack, which is closer to what is going on in ValhallaShimmer.

Not to say that either approach for getting a slow attack is better. ValhallaShimmer and the Bloom algorithms use one method for slowing the attacks, the Lexicon Random Hall uses a second approach, and the Quantec Room Simulator uses a totally different approach. All of them have their own unique sound qualities. I'm a fan of them all.

Excellent! I'm a total reverb freak, so a lot of the things I talk about are probably applicable to other hardware, plugins, etc. Thanks for reading the blog!

Another tips and tricks. This one covers getting ValhallaShimmer to, well, shimmer:

http://valhalladsp.wordpress.com/2010/1 ... himmering/

I also posted Devo videos. Which have nothing to do with ValhallaShimmer, but have rekinded my lust for the Minimoog.

Alrighty, here's the last tips and tricks for awhile. The first one shows how the diffusion control in ValhallaShimmer can be used in the place of predelay - i.e. to help separate the reverb from the source:

http://valhalladsp.wordpress.com/2010/1 ... -predelay/

The next one shows how to get a chorus sound out of ValhallaShimmer:

http://valhalladsp.wordpress.com/2010/1 ... ks-chorus/

At some point next week, I will wrap all these tips and tricks + the post describing the ValhallaShimmer controls, put them in a PDF, and call it good.

Followed your tutorial to get this old guitar track to shimmer and "bloom". I think I used one of the reverse settings to get it sounding more like a drifting organ-pad sound. On the lead bit, I disabled the reverb and just used the pitch shifting component with all the pitch shifted aliased artifacts in tack for a gritty vintage pitch shift sound.

I like the lead guitar, and pitch shifting, quite a bit. Backing off on the Diffusion control can make a smooth "shimmer" sound turn into much rawer. I would still recommend using the Dark color mode, to minimize the aliasing with this setup.

This is the result of slamming random keys on my keyboard for 10 minutes plus 5 instances of valhalla chained.

http://www.elanhickler.com/misc/melody333.mp3 (just a clip of the 10 mins)

even a baby could do this.
