So why don't you all stop arguing about stuff that doesn't matter at all and do the test already ?
You will get the same result as that dawbench crap website, simply because you will be desiging a benchmark that will give best multithreading results.

Take 8 mixer tracks, all independent (no routing between them), place the same CPU-hog plugin in each track, and you will get good multithreaded performances.
..but this is not how any real project looks like. A real project will have a CPU hog in 1 track, one light plugin in the second, 3 CPU hogs in the third, 2 lights in the 4th, the second track chained to the third, some plugins having their own multithreading, etc. This is what you should test, a real project.

For benchmark projects, multicores can be very efficient, like on a quad you can process 3x to 4x a CPU hog plugin at the same time as 1. For real projects, multithreading (yes, multithreading has a CPU cost itself) can sometimes result in worse performances (making a thread wait for an event has a CPU cost much higher than the one of a basic equalizer)

In my real projects i tend to use low CPU plugins (Synth1 for example) because i am not a pro and i don't own any CPU hungry commercial monsters.

But OK if you want to test with a real project with a real song, be my guest...

Take any of your songs and move it to a different host to see how it compares to your favorite one.

like there is any link between CPU usage & being commercial..

Come on :) You must be kidding here.

You know well that on average the freeware synth will be much simpler and mainly (but not exclusively) for this reason use much less CPU cycles.

I'd actually expect the opposite, the freeware synth to be written by someone starting programming, and eat more CPU than what it could. There are also lots of algos that are very simple to write in their slow version, & very hard to optimize for speed. Like, convolution.

Being simpler to the user, or even being simpler by code, has nothing to do with being faster for the CPU.

Apart from being OT we are talking about 2 different things.

1. Differences in CPU efficiency per voice with the same hardware emulation accuracy.

2. Differences in CPU efficiency per voice with different levels of hardware emulation accuracy (freeware usually, but not always limited to emulation on a much more basic level - ie few generations older - ie not latest generation and commercial usually cutting edge latest and often breakthrough tech).

Good Morning.

Did any of you people sleep?

At all?? :help:

I'm thinking that any test, whatsoever, is only going to fuel this thread further into DAW wars ....

So, like platform wars..can these measurement contests be put aside and let workflow be the guide here?

with the same hardware emulation accuracy.
what's about hardware emulation?

Having or not having to use freeze is workflow...

Software plugins very often try to emulate hardware synths, effects and their components...

Seriously are you 100% sober right now ?

Ehhh... Do we have a facepalm emote on this forum ?

Look, with all the multicore processors out there...I'm putting one together using Xeon chips for crying out loud it is not as if we are still in the days of PII things now, right?

I've been using Reaper on my i7 2700 and have yet to freeze any tracks...good grief.

so to resume all this, you can only test using freeware plugins with inferior emulation of hardware at low CPU cost, because you don't have them big commercial plugins that emulate hardware better....

now excuse me I have to find some hardware to emulate

To heck with it..I'm going back to VAX/VMS!!!! :help: :x

Cool but what DAW will you be running on it? :)
