Even this statement, as harsh as it may sound, says something. There is really a scary mass of synthesizers around, one must do something special to break over the threshold... Anyway it's better than another "ah, this is cool, see you" remark. Too much sweets give you gas.Cupwise wrote:constructive criticism, yes. saying that you're (as Compy said) ditching all synth entries because you have too many synths... explain to me how that's healthy or productive.

An idiot on Set Theory:

Are developers really such sissies? Are they totally encouraged and will they never participate in the DC because of ONE guy who doesn't like their plugin?:shock:Crackbaby wrote:I don't think the encouragement argument is going to work on Compyfox. He/she can't understand how his comments may cause one developer to not compete in the DC again. Neither he does understand how praising someone can 'encourage' that person to work harder and to overcome what maybe was considered not possible.
The use of the word "ditch" speaks for itself, doesn't it?
I can't believe that. Compared to music, even if there would be 50 people saying that they don't like my music, I would continue in making music nevertheless. And I hope, in the case of developers, they will continue despite some criticism, too.

My take here. I think this kind of comments is something every experienced developer has seen at least once. So I encourage beginners to learn how to act in front of that, that will be very useful for them in the future
I have seen what happened for Urs about DIVA and the zero-delay feedback for example, and... I'm glad he was able to defend himself and his products against bashing tentatives
That's what it means to develop great products.
Anyway, I think the "true" spirit of the KVR Developer Challenge is to allow anybody to try to develop something, innovative or not. I would be very happy to see any of the beginners here who has developed a synth or anything else to become a professional developer in the future, thanks to kind comments and votes in the KVR Developer Contest, allowing him to continue in this path, and to develop future awesome products.
Oh, and I'm a beginner too

Even the big Urs has only reached the synthie sky after going through the buggy programming hell...it's a long way to a professional business, and if you've finally achieved it, there will be competitors and haters, too.
If a newcomer makes a simple 3-OSC-synth with Synthmaker, why not? I can't vote for it as No. 1, and I may have 50 other 3-OSC-synths, but it helps him/her to gain experience in programming and make something better in the next contest...

Hmm. Says that criticism is healthy and then when one's own criticism is critiqued... bails out. Hmpf.

So what? One digs it the other ditches it. Let them all speak out, the forum would be deadly boring without it.whyterabbyt wrote:and if you do break over that threshold? 'ditched' anyway.

A creative genius is very sensitive to harsh criticism. A businessman is not. All you need is a little politeness.
It's like a birthday where the guy starts to complain about the presents.. Just shut up and smile, say thank you.
It seems like you have no idea how far someone can go with a pat on the shoulder every now and then.
So what if there's already a lot of 3xOsc synthedit synths. It still takes a lot of work to build and make UI for. And then just to hear "ditch". Will you try harder the next DC? Will you learn programming to make a better one? Not everyone, but i bet a lot will just say "Nevermind then".
When the DC12 started, the first comments where about how many entries there were and how awesome that was. I'd like to see the same thing happen next year as well.
Why creative persons are "sissies"?
In order to make something useful for others you need to see "reality" not just from your own point of view, but outside the box and from other peoples eyes. In order to do that you need empathy. If you're very empathic you are vulnerable to criticism.

Nevertheless, I'm sure that people like Urs wouldn't have such a great success if they would have given up after every critic. They never said never again. They followed their way fearless, and they learned from the useful critics. There always will be people that criticize others, you cannot prevent it, so you have to bear it and learn to say nevermind.Crackbaby wrote:A creative genius is very sensitive to harsh criticism. The word nevermind reminds me of Kurt Cobain. I wonder if criticism is part of why he killed himself. I hope not. I have to research that.

Lots of people take cocain. I presume most cocain user death is via overdose, not self-inflicted gunshot to the head. I don't know man, I am not sure. I heard that if you can't be sensitive, you can't be an artist. Probably a generalization.Tricky-Loops wrote: As his name alludes, the problem was Cocain, not Criticism...
