He acknowledges in an email that $20 is too much for just what this update gives but (1) was necessary for his survival and (2) was necessary if he was going to partner with PA.
Bottom Line: It was this or DS goes out of business.
My only problem was with not being informed that my info would be shared with PA, even though I'm already a PA customer. It's the principal and the fact that what he did is in violation of the privacy act.
However, I understand him wanting to stay in business.
Sorry if you can't be as sympathetic.

Paying for future updates isn’t a big deal. Making it a “this $19 offer ends 5 March” FOMO deal (with no clear indication as to what the long-term price is or whether it’s a buy it all over again at a higher price deal) is definitely a step too far.

The right way to do this would be to make a 1.19 version with all the bug fixes available on the DS site free for existing users, and give the 1.20 PA version some kind of minimal "feature" improvement like a few extra wavetables.

Not even close to the same. Thorn is not abandonware. It is still being developed. It’s the same as the the dev taking up ilok where the older versions will no longer be supported as the newer version is built on a different copy protection scheme.Gamma-UT wrote: Fri Feb 08, 2019 10:55 pmOk.masterhiggins wrote: Fri Feb 08, 2019 10:46 pm This is unacceptable. I expect my software developers to be my bitch at all times. This act of trying to keep his business viable is treachery at its finest.
But it’s Ok to get free stuff just because you didn’t get any more updates. Apparently, existing customers won’t get updates unless they pay $19 before 5th March. Should those who don’t pay in time issue chargebacks? I mean, Thorn 1.1 is now abandonware.masterhiggins wrote: Credit card chargebacks are your best friend when it comes to abandonware.
I think that quote is from the pulsar thread, where the developer is no longer active but is still selling the plugin and it can’t even be authorized anymore. How did you even compare the two?

seems like it was a clutch decision on his part.
I agree that he should have asked his customers permission first about sharing their emails.

Of all the actual problems in the world, I’m going to file $19 to stay afloat under F for “first world problems.”imrae wrote: Fri Feb 08, 2019 11:28 pm There's an ethical problem with charging for bug fixes when you never advertised that the bugs existed in the first place.

Just upgraded due to having a voucher. I think what is off about this is the PA pricing. As someone said in another thread, part of the appeal with Thorn was the attractive price. The bang for buck ratio was good. At 200 its gonna be compared to another category of plugins such as Serum, Avenger etc. This new price is soley there to create the artificial scarcity tactic they are running. (So that the sale price is the new normal price) Theres absolutely no denying that, and that strategy is there basically to manipulate us to want to strike while theres a sale and to want to keep track of the sales.

i just should have been informed of how it was all going to go down. as it is i feel like a piece of rotting meat at a market. to be thrown away and discarded. there are changes happening in software right now. consolidation, price jacking, cheaper made products... the repercussions of edm.

Honestly, none of the stuff ever appealed to me in the first place, for some reason. And I buy everything (almost). I’m not surprised sales might not have been the greatest. They were practically giving them away at PB for one thing. A sure sign of being hard up for cash.

Guys I don't think any privacy laws were breached or broken, when one company merges into another company all the assets including customer data is then transferred to the new company. So he didn't share you're info wit PA, he became a part of PA at which point so did ur info, and by info I mean contact information, and by contact information i mean email, unless somebody got a call from PA or handwritten letter in the mail.
