It's pretty sterile, if not somber, but it doesn't affect me, really, like the lack of sun here in Seattle affects many (but not me). I was using Matthew's UI themes, but he's not able to make them properly since the last update, so they've become obsolete. I foolishly bought LPX Colorizer not seeing their rather small, though in red, warning that their software doesn't fully work since the latest updates, as well, so that was a waste. Now I hope reading your post doesn't subliminally affect me each time I work in Logic - I don't want my joy to be affected.
Custom Icons in Logic make it a lot more interesting to look at. When that was added in I spent a good amount of time collecting them, and there was general interest, but that faded. IMO one thing missing in Logic is a concise community like Reaper or Live have of people hosting things in a consolidated way.
There are remnants of websites with a few Logic icons, and even a sparsely populated thread of people sharing Articulation mappings, but nothing that organized anymore. At least not that I've found.

Search the web for Logic icons, hide the volume slider in the tracks (thanks Jace-BeOS), and the icons can take up enough room to add some color to the Arrange page etc. Reaper is the only other DAW I know that does this, and I don't know why? I think it's a fantastic feature.

C’mmon Apple, we all know that you have obviously leaked this to create more interest in this product and create more sales.
Nice marketing ploy, but can you release the damm thing NOW before everyone will loose their interest please?

Yea, truth be told I'd probably buy that on day one.

There used to be a nice selection of icons stored at LogicProHelp, but I'm not sure they're there anymore. I used to like using them, but it was frustrating not having access to all the specific instruments & effects (The generic ones make Logic look like a toy, and once you have any more than two synths, they start to become useless as identifiers.

Things are a lot better in the latest Logic, however. If you use the 'new' ScreenGrab app (Not sure which OS is needed, but i know it works on Mojave), you can grab anything you wish to use as an icon (While Logic is open), and when it automatically shows the preview you just drag it onto a track (You'll see the green "+" show). No more hunting for the right size png files, or having to edit photos down to size. Just grab a quick snap, and Bob's your aunty's live-in lover.

Sweet!

It's inevitable... but good to hear a rumor as that puts it a bit closer!

I love having custom track icons. I’ve made an icon for every third-party plugin and all of my external hardware. I’m very visual, so this isn’t just for pretty. I literally find things faster by visual than by reading.

Cakewalk Sonar had this feature too, but they were limited to shitty sizes and didn’t support alpha transparency due to Cakewalk’s reliance on the lame and cosmetically-ancient Windows API.

I think a lot of people, including developers here and elsewhere are overlooking huge leaps forward Catalina has made in regards to inegrating iOS and OS X. So a friend of mine spent almost 20 years at Apple in development and Q&A, 15 or so years ago they were asked to strip massive amounts of things from OS X to see how far they could go before is broke completely, to later find out it was a preliminary test for developing iOS. They're the same underneath the hood.

So IMO Apple has forever had this vision of eventually having one platform to develop in that allows say an Audio Unit to work on both iOS and OS X. This is going to also work with applications.

I think we're going to see in Logic a move towards touch screen friendly mixer, plug in, and I would guess Loop firing windows that you can use with an iPad in the new screen sharing feature you see in Catalina. The iOS app is cool but this would be a lot more intensive etc.

That and a native version of Logic or hyped up version of Garageband that easily imports Logic songs into the iPad for live use etc. 8)

Same here, over the years I made dozens and dozens of icons. BTW hiding the track volume fader really helps, thanks! I love DP10, Live and Bitwig as well, but Reaper and Logic both using icons is a huge plus! Live in particular is IMO great looking, but confusing/cumbersome when scanning large track counts.

I’m glad my pointer got you in the right direction for track header configuration. Sorry I didn’t remember the exact wording of the menu at the moment I wrote that message or I would have been more precise. As I look back on that post, I hope it didn’t seem passive-aggressive!

Yeah, having lots of tracks that look alike doesn’t work well for me. I use the icons AND clip coloring to make my projects easier for myself to see and intuit. I also make sure to organize tracks by how soon the track content starts. If something is only present at a later stage in the song, I know to look lower on the list of tracks. I used to group like tracks, and still do if it doesn’t break the time-based organization scheme.

Not sure if you missed my little tip, a few posts back, about how easy it is now to create icons. Check it out! It's great! :tu:

Saw it, thanks! 👍🏼 I didn’t know you could drag and drop them into Logic from other places.

Since I have two machines with Logic that I try to keep somewhat identical, and still hope to have a much newer and robust machine in future, I save all my custom icons in a folder within /Users/[user]/Pictures for future use. I’ll try that drag and drop action some time in the future when I need to add an existing icon to an install of Logic that lacks them.

Side note: I wish there was a way to rearrange our custom icons in Logic.

Logic needs to either update Ultrabeat or give us a pattern editor like Studio One.
